Hi,
I'm trying to find the marriage/location of one of my ancestors.
His name was Hector McNeil, and his wife was Catherine McMillan, their children were born in Campbeltown.
James McNeil b. 14th Aug 1788
Donald McNeil b. 28th May 1793
Donald McNeil b. 31st Aug 1794
Hector McNeil b. 26th Nov 1796
Can anyone help me find any info on him ?

Hi Daryl
There is nothing on IGI as far as marriages are concerned, the children are there although you probably already know that.
There is always the chance the records were lost, or they might not have been formally married
I had a look on SP but no result there either.
All the best with your search, maybe someone else will come along with better luck.

Hi Daryl
The wording of the OPR entries for the children should give you some clue as to whether the couple were married or not in the eyes of the church, but maybe you have already checked the wording of the christenings?
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,
I have had a look at one of Hector & Katherine's children's christening entry in the o.p.r's, and it says
Hector, lawful son of . . . so it looks like they were married.
Any thoughts on what to do next ?
Regards,
Daryl

Hello Daryl,
You can get a reasonable idea of the condition of the OPRs for Campbeltown, and any other Scottish parish, by consulting the FamilySearch Wiki. https://www.familysearch.org/learn/wiki ... ,_Scotland
Not easy reading. The records for Campbeltown appear to be fairly scattered and tattered but probably not too bad compared to a lot of other parishes.
People who get as far back as the late 18th Century, can’t find a birth or a marriage or whatever, and are wondering what to do next, usually end up joining the club with most of the rest of us.
All the best,
Alan

Re: Hector McNeil & Catherine McMillan - When/Where Did They
A search on SP with a whole load of wildcards to cover all the likely mis-spellings of the surnames etc came up with :
16/02/1781 MCNEILL HECTOR FLORANCE MCMILLAN/FR1377 M CAMPBELTOWN /ARGYLL 507/00 0050 0014
I know the first name of the bride is not quite what you had note of.... but given the date and place and the other names seeming to match, I'd not be discounting it right away. I've not looked at it as I do not have enough credits.
Do the OPR births give you a place that they were living at the time? Just incase that links up with any place perhaps mentioned in the above OPR. Also, there may, if you are very lucky, be an occupation metioned in the births or marriage which may help match up details. (I don't know how detailed the Campbeltown OPRs tend to be as I've no one in my own tree in that area at that time)
However, the OPR may give no clues at all to it being the correct couple or not.... but hey, that's family history....
Not seeing any kids to Hector and Florance so, another thought is that it may be the same Hector, the bride may be a first marriage, and your Catherine was maybe the previous bride's sister or another relative, or er, not related at all!!
Best wishes
