missing father !
Hi all
I know this is a long shot but I was hoping the community maybe able to help trace a family member on my mothers side.
Her name was Margaret Jane Elliot who was born in 1886 her Mother and Father were called Adam and Jane who married in 1880.
I am trying to trace the father of her son George Elliot born in Edinburgh in 1911 but is listed on the birth certificate as illegitmate. Margaret Jane is listed as a domestic servant in Kinloch Laing (from what I can make out).
I can't find out any information about where she lived. I know she was a nurse/midwife but where she qualified I don't know.
As i say it's not a lot to go on but any advice would be welcome.
KInd regards Alastair

Hi Alastair,
I went for a look at the birth certificate. Can you confirm - was it 1911 in Edinburgh? The only George Elliot that I found as born in Edinburgh in 1911 was the wrong one.
All the best,
AndrewP

Annie Macleod 37
Margaret Elliot 15 born Kinloch Lewis Rosshire
Margaret McCullum 34
Janet McCullum 38
Her father, a gamekeeper, is also living in the village with her siblings.
Looks like the village was still her home address when George was born.

Annette

Hi Alastair,
The place is Kinloch by Lairg. Lairg is in the region of 200 miles north of Edinburgh.
Have you found them in the 1911 census?
All the best,

Re: missing father !
Hi Alastair,
I see from his birth certificate that he was born at Easkin, Lochs, Lewis - and that is presumably what later became misunderstood as Kinloch, Lewis.
On seeing the family in the 1891 census, three of the children were born on Lewis. The mother died about a fortnight after giving birth a few months before the 1891 census.
Is young George the one shown aged 9 months as a boarder with the Thomson family in Edinburgh in the 1911 census?
All the best,
AndrewP

Re: missing father !
I wonder if it's worth contacting the archives to see if there is anything in the church records even though the birth was registered at Edinburgh.
http://www.highlandarchives.org.uk/lochaber.asp
According to somebody at Ancestry she also had a daughter Margaret Watt Elliot and there is a birth indexed with that name a few years after George.
Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette yes Margaret did have a daughter born in 1915 called Mary Watt Elliot but I've been unable to find any record of her birth to see if she too was illegitmate or if a father is named.
Thank you for the link I will try that soon. How on earth did you find the information of when she was 15, she was Margaret Jane Elliot so could this be wrong as it says Margaret Elliot, but it's a fantastic lead if correct my thanks
Hi Andrew I always thought young George was born in Edinburgh and yes I beleive that he must be the boarder in the census but I'm not sure why he would of been there ? I guess know one will know.
With all this new information I'm getting a bit confused so am trying to sort it out in my head.
Kind regards Alastair

Hi Annette have you had any other ideas ? I have been juggling with my tree "Stewart" and my Mum's "Elliot", but I have to admit I'm struggling with the Elliot's
