Stampa Family Edinburgh

Post by chiddicks » Fri Sep 15, 2017 3:18 pm

Has anybody any connection to the Stampa family originally from Como in Italy, who settled in Edinburgh??

My Stampa connection starts with Dominic Stampa born approx 1765 in Como Italy.

Dominic emigrated to Edinburgh in Scotland.

The following document gives more substantial information about Dominic's place of origin: Register of Aliens 1798-1803 (Ref: SL115/2/1) who arrived in the UK. www.edinburgh.gov.uk/download/downloads ... 8-1825.pdf

There are another three people on the Register of Alient who share a surname and profession.
Luigi Stampa, 30, Milan Italy to Dover 1784, Leith Street, Barometer Merchant. (calculated birth year -1754)
Valentino Stampa, 42, Milan Italy to [port not mentioned] 1797, Leith Street, Barometer merchant. (calculated birth year - 1755)
Charles Stampa, 32, from Como Italy to Yarmouth 1798, 14 Leith Street, Carver, gilder and looking glass maker (calculated birth year - 1766)
Dominic and Charles have birth dates one year apart and are possibly brothers. Valentino and Luigi are likely to be related.

From various trade directories we can establish that Dominic was a Carver, Gilder and Print Seller, plus we also know that the Stampa family made Barometers.

Addresses include:
1804 - 14 Leith Street, Edinburgh
1805 - 14 Terrace, Edinburgh
1820 - 69, Princess Street, Edinburgh
1821 - 6, St.David's Street, Edinburgh
1824 - 18 Calton Hill, Edinburgh
1825 - 54, Leith Street, Edinburgh
1827 - 60 Leith Street, Edinburgh

MARRIAGE
Dominic married Mary Hair sometime before 1804 (when their first known child was born). There was a 19 year age gap, making Dominic approximately 39 and Mary approximately 21.

CHILDREN
Dominic had a total of 7 known children in Scotland; only three of these children survived him. Only two of his children (Nicolina and Louis) went on to have families of their own.
His first known child was born when he was 39 years old, Nicolina (who may have been his last child) was born when he was 57. Dominic started this family approximately 6 years after he moved to Scotland.

Children:

Agnes Stampa (1804-1805)
Mary Caroline Stampa (1805-1892)

Henry Louis Stampa (1809-1812)

Charly Francis Stampa (1813-1844)
Lewis/Louis Anthony Stampa (1815-1885)

George Peter Stampa (1818-1843)

Nicolina Elizabeth Stampa (1822-1919)

Any help appreciated.

An unusual name to be working with.

Have you got the census records for the families?

I checked Freecen.org first and got 7 hits for 1841:
STAMPA Anna F 25 Independent Outside Census County (1841) Dumfries-Burgh
STAMPA Caroline F 30 Midlothian St Cuthbert's
STAMPA Dominio M 75 Print Seller Overseas - Foreign St Cuthbert's
STAMPA Francis M 20 Carver & Gilder Journeyman Midlothian St Cuthbert's
STAMPA George M 20 Shopman Outside Census County (1841) St Cuthbert's
STAMPA Mary F 55 Outside Census County (1841) St Cuthbert's
STAMPA Nicolina F 15 Midlothian St Cuthbert's

the top one Anna is living with a polish family - MICHALOWSKI Joseph in Dumfries. The rest are all the one household.

Curiously I did the same search on Scotlands People and got slightly different results:
Anna still in dumfries:
STAMPA ANNA 1841 F 25 821/ 3/ 25 Dumfries
The other household however have different names:
STAMPA JOHN 1841 M 33 685/2 138/ 5 St Cuthbert's
STAMPA ANN 1841 F 26 685/2 138/ 5 St Cuthbert's
STAMPA JOHN 1841 M 6 685/2 138/ 5 St Cuthbert's
STAMPA WALTER 1841 M 4 685/2 138/ 5 St Cuthbert's
STAMPA ARTHER WELLINGT 1841 M 2 685/2 138/ 5 St Cuthbert's
STAMPA MARY ANN 1841 F 0 685/2 138/ 5 St Cuthbert's
in 1851 there are no hits at all for any Stampa individuals on Scotland's people but
the family show up on Freecen:
Piece: SCT1851/685 Place: St Cuthbert's -Midlothian Enumeration District: 24
Civil Parish: St Cuthberts Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Barony Of Canongate
Folio: 704 Page: 7 Schedule: 21
Address: 13 Hill Place

Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
STAMPA Mary Head W F 66 Annuitant Lanarkshire - Glasgow
STAMPA Caroline Dau U F 42 Midlothian - Edinburgh
STAMPA Louis Son U M 36 Printer & Glazier Lanarkshire - Glasgow
GEHRIE Agnes Neice U F 33 Midlothian - Edinburgh
Mary's husband has obviously died by then [you didn't mention a date of death for him]

I suspect they've been miss-indexed or miss-transcribed somewhere along the lines -possibly as STAMP OR STAMPER or you may have to get creative in searching for them.
STAMPER DOMINIE 1841 M 75 685/2 130/ 1 St Cuthbert's Midlothian
is likely your man on SP!
