looking for advice
My grandfather Alexander Macleod died Dec 15 1935 age 67in Tradeston,Glasgow. He was a steel erecter and widower of Maggie Anderson
His parents were given as Malcolm Macleod Joiner deceased and Catherine Macleod subsequently Mackenzie, MS Macleod There is an ROC entry on his death cert.Vol1 P82 Jan15 1936
His marr cert states 28 April 1893 Ingram st Glasgow,Ships rigger
age 23.He Marr Maggie Anderson age 19. again his father is Malcolm and Catherine Mackenzie previously Macleod, MS Macleod.
I have a copy of a birth cert (I assumed was him Alexander Macleod) as Illigitamate.Born 25 May 1868,Glasgarraig,Argyll.parish Muckairn.
Mother Kitty Macleod(maid servant)present at birth Mary Macleod grandmother.
If this was indeed his birth where can Icheck she is the same lady as Catherine on his death cert and marr cert.and could Malcolm be his natural father.
illigitamate macleod.....

I think you need to find this guy (and his mother) in the censuses and see if you can find a consistent paper trail.
birth certificate (1868, if it is the right one)
1871 census
1881 census
1891 census
marriage certificate (1893)
1901 census
death certificate (1935)
Also, can you trace the mother's death certificate and see who the informant was (could it have been son Alexander?).
See where the censuses give his birthplace as.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

Spooky
This enquiry could almost be about my family who lived and died in Taynuilt. They lived at Blackmill, not sure if its the name of a dwelling or area. I have managed to trace most of the family from Govan to Taynuilt and found they all dies young in Taynuilt. but 1 member is proving elusive, this being a JOHN MCKENZIE. 14 Oct 1858. Govan, found on the 1861 census in Dervaig living with grandparents then on the 1871 census as living in Blackmill, Taynuilt but nothing on the 1881, after this we can find no paper trail. I wondered if someone could help me out as we are in Scotland at the end of May on an ancestry trail and Taynuilt is where we will be.

Hi Hertsunited & Welcome to Talking Scot.
With such a common name I suppose that Scotlands people are pleased.
I would be inclined to research on the 1881 Census & if you haven't already insert the place of birth as an option. This is how I found an elusive rellie. If you are near to a LDS Family History Centre I would have a look at their 1881 Census discs(they are still there!)& just keep plugging at it.
Off course he could have left the country,be misindexed(try wildcards for the surnames).Sounds like he was born Govan 1858? then is living with G/Parents by 1861 in Dervaig & still there in 1871.he possibilly Married& moved away or went back to Glasgow or emigrated. So really you are searching for a needle in a haystack.I take you have checked to see if he died?I know that sounds really basic but sometimes we miss the obvious.
Sorry can't help further but I am sure somebody can!

Hi. I have looked at every conutation for John, in the 1871 Census he was living at Kirkton, Muckairn and was still at school. I have tried deaths as far as 1955 to no avail, I have tried marriages. I have however found a death in 1883 and the age fits but it says Marine Register, I feel that this is the 1 I am looking for but do not know how to gain access to these records and was hoping someone here could tell me where to start looking. Is there a way of checking cemetary lists as I am sure he would have been brought back home and buried with his family in Taynuilt. If not the one way to find out is look at the gravestone myself when I am up in May.
Many thanks for all your help so far.](./images/smilies/brick-wall.gif)

Hello Hertsunited
Probably not much help in your search, but I would take a good guess that Kitty and Catherine are one and the same. I have come across many a Catherine who is known as Kitty.
