JAMES @ EDMUND.....

Post by jennovo » Tue Feb 28, 2006 10:30 pm

Hi all,
I need some help! Information which I have: James Overend, wire worker journeyman, married Elizabeth Hampton on the 14 June 1893 in the district of Blythswood, burgh of Glasgow. Parents were given as; Edmund Overend, wire worker master and Elizabeth Campbell. Edmund was also the witness to this marriage. As yet, I can find no records of Edmund or birth for James. Has anyone seen this information or can help in any way?
Have downloaded, from Scotlandspeople, two birth registrations for James born abt 1864. There were only two and neither are correct. One has William as the father in Ayr the other Isaac in Stirling. I can't find birth or census records, (from IGI or Scotlandspeople), for James in Scotland. Prior to his marriage there is nothing for him!
There is an entry on IGI for a James OVERN born in the correct year (1864) father Edward, mother Mary Ann Campbell, also marriage for Edward and Mary Ann Campbell. I downloaded the marriage registration from SP but it gives me no more clues except; in 1859 Edwards occupation was given as Engineer's labourer. -Everyone still with me????? I don't think these are the same families - BUT MAYBE. What do you think??
Any ideas?
Thank you,
Jen

Hi Jen
Have you looked for a death for James? I just wondered it this might confirm anything ...or just confuse more!

What is the age given at the time of his marriage?
What about the 1901 census - is he there? If so that would give you a place of birth and possible a cross-check on his age to work from. There seems to be one age 37 in Midlothian in 1901.

I wonder if James was born elsewhere - England maybe? Ireland?
Couldn't resist a google on the name!
http://www.ancestry.com/search/SurnameP ... code=13304 states:
  • English (Yorkshire): topographic name for someone who lived at the ‘upper end’ of a settlement, from Middle English overe, uvere ‘upper’ + end ‘end’.
and there seem to be a few Overend family web sites, though not sure these will be of any help.

Well done indeed Jack.

That leaves the questions, what does it look like on the census microfilm? Is it mis-transcribed, or does it actually say Nerend on the enumeration page?

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Andrew,
I'll have a look at the page next time i'm at The Mitchell.
There have been some "funny" transcriptions in the 1881, but it's still the best £30 i've ever spent!
It paid for itself in less than a month. :D

You'll find James birth in Blythswood in 1864 under OVERN the mother was Mary Ann Campbell so I suspect the witness gave incorrect details.

Doing a Marriage search for Ed* O*v*n* to Campbell yields one entry for Blythswood. This of course names both sets of parents (hopefully correctly this time).

What's more, Edmond's in-laws lived in Scotland so you should be able to find a death for them too.

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Thank you everyone. Amazing - thank you Jack!
This certainly looks as though it may be my husband's family.
I will get into it further tonight and hopefully I might be able to find more on SP. I downloaded James death cert this morning and though his mother is given as Elizabeth Overend on his marriage cert. it was given as Mary on his death cert.
Wish me luck!
Thank you again,
Jen

Hi Jen,
The family are also as OVERN in the 1861 census; these are from a name index, so no more details.
