Mystery of the name Newcastle.....

Post by angel » Sun Mar 06, 2005 2:24 pm

Hi

I am trying to find information on Elizabeth Newcastle or other variations which are Rewcastle [written on oner mother-in-laws death certificate], Roughcastle, Roecastle Ruecastle, Rowcastle. The other names came frome LDS when I did a parent search under the nam Rewcastle.

I also have two birth dates 1780/1795 which also give me a variation in mariiage dates the same goes for her husband James Johnston who was a canal boatman who died about 1821. Can anyone solve this for me anything would be helpful.

Many Thanks
Heather

Hi,

All of these Johnston/Newcastle records are submissions so should be treated with caution. The only record that may have been of help was George Johnston's 2nd marriage to Katherine Granger in 1856 ... except there isn't one on SP!

Or his death in 1879, it's not there either.

The 1881 census has no Newcastles in Lowland Scotland but a few Rewcastle/Rowcastle mostly in Lanarkshire and Ayrshire, oodles of Johnstons.

A daughter of James and Elizabeth, Frances, is reported to have died in 1899, there is no such death on Scotland's People. But this could be her in 1881:
Dwelling: Bank St
Census Place: Old Monkland, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203699 GRO Ref Volume 652-2 EnumDist 5 Page 12
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Fanny JOHNSTON OR GRAY W 65 F Coatbridge, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Housekeeper
Isabella GRAY U 31 F Coatbridge, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Occ: Dressmaker
John JOHNSTON OR GRAY 9 M Coatbridge, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Nephew Handicap: Deaf & Dumb
James JOHNSTON OR GRAY 6 M Coatbridge, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Nephew
Occ: Scholar

Age is 10 years out.

Must admit that I've not come across the Rewcastle name before but there is a Rough Castle on the Antonine Wall just outside of Falkirk about 10 - 12 miles away from Airdrie/Monklands. It could also stem from the Gaelic/Gàidhlig Ruadh (Red) Castle or the French Rue (Castle Street/Road)

Another submission gives George's deathplace as San Francisco. But no sign of a George of the right age in the 1870 census or family with the given names in 1880.

There is very probably some truth in many of the dates but on IGI some of the children are still been born well into the 1820's which makes either their births or James' death date wrong.

If the birth dates are quite accurate then James and Elizabeth were married before 1801 suggesting that James and Elizabeth were probably born in the mid to late 1870's which means that James mother was a VERY good age if she died after 1855.

James and Elizabeth Rewcastle married in Monklands in 1801 there are a few (reliable) recorded Johnstone births on SP:

Ann 1802
Thomas 1809
Thomas 1811
Euphemia 1814
George 1817
Marrion 1826 (mother Bethia Rewcastle)

A search for children born to James and Elizabeth Rewcastle DOES yield extracted records with submissions in red:

14. EUPHEMIA JOHNSTON - International Genealogical Index

Not a great deal of help but I'd be tempted to go with the Rewcastle spelling and try to track down some of the children's deaths
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hi Andy

Thanks for all of the info I will need to print it off to look at properly but it looks as if a lot of it ties in with what I already have. Fanny Gray nee Johnston died 1 March 1897 1 Richmond Sreet Coatbridge Glasgow and was a widow. This info came from scotlandspeople and she is a daughter of James Johnston. James was a canal boatman and it may be difficult to find his death. The info that I have for George Comes from LDS it says that he died Sacramnto, Sacramento California.

Since Fanny died in 1897 there was a very good reason why I couldn't find her in 1899!

There are a couple of Rewcastle marriages in the Monkland area just after James and Elizabeth got married and some deaths up to 1880, a few of the older ones are likely to be from your family.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).
