Marriage - James Crichton to Margaret Girtridge c1851.....

Post by emanday » Thu Jun 01, 2006 2:48 pm

S'me again :?

On the 1871 birth cert of Marion Barr McMillan Crichton it shows her parents as James Crichton and Margaret Girtridge, seemingly married on 13th June 1851, Newton on Ayr (it says). I have tried every which way to find these folks, but with no success.

I have found them mentioned in several databeses, but only as Marion's parents - no sign of a marriage certificate. As it was the mother who registered the birth I (possibly incorrectly) had assumed that the marriage date she gave was accurate. However, as she "marked" rather than actually signed, who knows?

P.S. No offence intended to our male members by my comment "<i>As it was the mother who registered the birth</i>"

Hi Emanday,

I agree, there is no sign of the 1851 marriage on the online IGI. However, that source shows six children to that marriage.
  • THOMAS GIRTRIDGE CHRICHTON - Birth: 18 MAY 1856 Milton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
JOHN CHRICHTON - Birth: 07 SEP 1859 Milton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
ROBERT RODGER SMITH CHRICHTON - Birth: 04 APR 1862 Milton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
HELEN MCLEAN CHRICHTON - Birth: 26 SEP 1865 Milton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
MARGARET ROSS CRICHTON - Birth: 27 JAN 1869 Milton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
MARION BARR MCMILLAN CRICHTON - Birth: 25 JUN 1871 Milton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
The post-1860 birth certificates should all show the parents' marriage details. Do they agree with the 1851 Newton-on Ayr marriage (see if the husband could remember his marriage date, assuming he registered the births of some of the children). These certificates should all be available on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for you.

The listing below appears to be them in the 1881 census and shows an older son James, presumably born in 1854, just before the start of statutory registration in Scotland.

Marriage - James Crichton to Margaret Girtridge c1851

AndrewP - You are wonderful =D>

Something of a disappointment that there seems to be no marriage record but this info you have given me might help to identify Margaret's parents, based on the traditional naming system more often than not used in Scotland in the past (including my generation).

With so many Kylies, Shanes etc... over the past few decades that method of tracing ancestors is swiftly disappearing.

I really appreciate the help I'm getting here.

Hi Emanday,
If you're looking for the family in 1861 on SP maybe watch the spelling,
the index i looked at has it as CRIGHTON - with a "G" in the middle.
It might be as CRICHTON on SP - indexes can always have differences.

Marriage - James Crichton to Margaret Girtridge c1851

Hi Jack - Yes I know about that spelling, and I did try it as well. Got to say, while I was typing it in I had visions of my Crichton ancestors performing synchronised spinning in their graves. That was a real bone of contention for the ones I can remember.

Thanks for the info :D
