WW1 boys please help!

Post by Anniespangles » Fri May 03, 2013 5:30 pm

I have a wee voluntary job at the moment putting together a data base of the young men who have their names inscribed on the local memorial stone.I have muster roll details of a young man named Martin Holloran he was 21yrs and 11mths on the 30.5 16 when he enrolled ,he lived at 23 William Street Dumbarton and was a fitters helper, his service numbers is 325955.Can any of you help shine more of a light on Martin? I have another man Private Patrick McGinley or McGinlay, I have an account written by him of his experiances in the trenches published on the 2nd May 1915.The article says he had people at 79 Collage street Dumbarton who he came to visit after being in hospital for 7 weeks with frost bite he got from trench conditions. It says he was in the 2nd Battalion Inniskillings could this be the same man on our memorial stone OR could it be another Patrick McGinley or McGinlay for whom I have a service return which says he died at Ypres 4/12.11.14- service number 4468 Scots Guards.Any help on these guys would be lovely, really Id be so thankful .Anne

Ishould also have added that in the remarks colum for Martin Hollorans enlistment it says Transfered 2/8th Argyll and Southern Highlanders 13.7.17

Hi Annie,

You certainly have a lot of names to research.

See Scottish War Memorials Project :: Dumbarton for pictures and some information regarding the memorial and those who fell in the wars.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hello Annie,

The National Archives medal card index has Martin down as Hollern. http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.u ... i=D2921869

Reference: WO 372/10/3492
Description: Medal card of Hollern, Martin
Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 325955, Private
Gordon Highlanders, G/41783, Private
Date: 1914-1920

There’s reference here to the 2/8th (The Argyllshire) Battalion, presumably that’s the “2/8th Argyll and Southern Highlanders” you mentioned. It was disbanded in July, 1918, and I don’t think there’s anything there about them leaving the UK, but he must have entered a Theatre of War later on, presumably with the Gordon Highlanders, if he was entitled to campaign medals. http://www.1914-1918.net/argyll.htm

Could this Patrick be the one who wrote the letter? He died 1915 according to the CWGC.

McGINLEY, PATRICK
Rank: Private
Service No: 3829
Date of Death: 16/05/1915
