Highland Light Infantry medal card
I located a medal card, and a related SWB rolls for a David Corral. I am trying to find out if this is my maternal Grandfather. The card and the roll provide no identifying information on the soldier, except that the age at the time the SWB roll was generated is close to my GF's age. He was born in 1888 in Brechin, and lived in Lanark at the beginning of the war. I know from my mother, that he served in a Scottish Regt, but have no other solid info about him. His full name was David Archibald Corral, born 1888, died 1954 in Glasgow. The medal card lists the organizations as 5th HLI, and later the Royal Scots fusiliers, and shows the soldier served at Gallipoli, and received the SWB. Is there any one out there that can help me connect the dots. All I have is circumstantial evidence that this medal card MAY be my grandfathers. Regards, CMD.

There’s only one soldier who exactly matches that name and was issued with campaign medals.

His name is also in the Glasgow Herald list. (last column). Note also that there’s a column where family members have supplied information. You would have to be lucky to find something there and it would take a fair bit of browsing.

Soldiers in Territorial battalions were renumbered in 1917. You can read all about it here and you’ll see that it can all get complicated. Number 281034 was in the 7th Bat. HLI, and 204967 was 4th Bat, RSF. http://www.1914-1918.net/TF_renumbering_infantry.htm

You could check the following Glasgow newspapers to see if there was a death notice with mention of former military service.
