Sergeant John Connolly, 2nd Battalion Highland Light Inf.
HI
My local genealogy group in Hawera, New Zealand, have been going through some photos and other things that have been given to us and came across this photo of Sergeant John Connolly of the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry. We are interested in finding out more about him and what he has to do with New Zealand. We are trying to find some information about him here, but there are quite a few John Connollys'. The photo was taken in Fyzabad India by Johnston Hoffmann possibly 1894. I checked out a couple of the medals and one looks like the Egypt (Tel-El-Kebir) & Khedives Star 1882? Would this be right? If there is more information about him, we may be able to return the photo to the family.
Thank you in advance.

Hello Julie and welcome to TalkingScot.
The star would be the Khedive's Star. It was awarded to all those who received the Egypt medal. The round one would be the Egypt Medal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egypt_Medal
According to regiments.org the 2nd HLI were headquartered at Fyzabad between about 1892 and 1897, and were in Egypt in 1882. https://web.archive.org/web/20071012140 ... /074-1.htm
There may be a pension or medal roll record for him at Ancestry or FindMyPast.
At the time of the 1881 census the 74th Regiment of Foot (renamed 2nd HLI from July 1881) was headquartered at Glasgow with a Depot at Hamilton. They appear to have been at Maryhill Barracks. Maybe you'll find him there.
If you don't have any luck here maybe you could try the Victorian Wars Forum. http://www.victorianwars.com/
Hope that helps,
Alan

If you can't pin him down in 1881 here's the 1881 Army List of officers of the 74th Foot.
