MILITARY- SEARCHABLE RESOURCES

Post by Tracey » Mon Feb 20, 2006 6:56 pm

Useful online searchable resources.

The National Archives searchable Catalogue
www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/default.asp
For
Army officers 1914-1921:
Information about officers during this time can be found in series WO 339. To find out whether we hold documents concerning the person in whom you are interested, search the Catalogue entering the surname in which you are interested, e.g. Smithers, as a keyword, WO 339 in the series reference - but experience tells me that if you put full name or sir name and initial it cuts out a lot of unnecessary returns.
And
British Army: Soldiers' Discharge Papers, 1760-1913
The majority of records of men discharged to pension between 1760 and 1913 are preserved in the records series WO 97. These records are arranged into distinct collections according to date of discharge and in some cases unit
Also
Board of Trade: Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen: Central Register of Seamen: Seamen's Records ('Pouches') Series code BT 372
The catalogue entry for each seaman's pouch includes; surname or patronym, initials, discharge number with prefix code where appropriate, place of birth and date of birth. The place of birth information is as it was endorsed on the face of the pouch but place names have not been verified

Evening Times Roll of Honour
http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/ ... honour.htm
During the First World War, the Evening Times newspaper printed short biographies of service personnel who were reported lost, missing or wounded.
Most of these biographies were accompanied by a photograph of these long-gone heroes, often now the only one that exists.
The Mitchell has produced an index to some 6,500 of these entries as a valuable addition to their Family History resources.
