Hello David,
In the London Times, Friday, Jun 04, 1943, there’s a list of hundreds of individuals who were awarded the British Empire Medal (Civil Division) in the Birthday Honours. All there is for your fellow is “H. Sutherland, A.B., M.N.;”
In the London Gazette of 4th June, 1943, you’ll see his entry in the right hand column about seven from the top. http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/ ... ments/2504
Did you get the B.E.M. medal record that Hugh found in the National Archives Documents Online? Here’s a link to his service records. I guess you’ll have to get those from Kew. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/cata ... D=-4728861
This is what a British Empire Medal looks like. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... B.E.M..jpg
All the best
Alan

Re: SS Menus of Cardiff
David,
I can easily decypher the file you have downloaded from BT 395/1. I need to see the image though and I don't know if this forum has the facility to upload it. If not you can post it on Mercantile Marine and I or someone will look at it. This file will tell you which campaign medals he was awarded but not easy to understand if you are not used to these documents.
Regarding the file mentioned by Alan, this is his seaman's pouch and BT 391 indicates to me that he took part in the Normandy landings. This also confirms what I said in my earlier post that he served on BENDORAN when he was awarded his BEM. BENDORAN was a blockship during the Normandy landings. The information held within these pouches is a bit hit or miss, some have lots of information others very little. You pay your money and take your chance but I would always recommend getting hold of it. For his actual service record this will be held in Form CRS 10 held also at Kew in piece BT 382/1744 at this link: http://www.rootschat.com/links/07nb/
The way you obtain BT 382 records from Kew has changed and is not as straight forward as once was the case. If you need further advice then make another post.
I hope that helps.
