Lamont Model Lodging House, Coatbridge

Post by Rockford » Mon Oct 06, 2008 9:01 pm

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know where Lamont Model Lodging House was in Coatbridge in the 1940s or is anyone able to give me any pointers on where to find out more information about what this type of place was?

Best wishes

Don't know if this helps.

Found this on "Google"1934 Lamont Model Lodging House,
60 Hospital Street, Coatbridge
Only Hospital Street I know of is/was in the Gorbals.

This site will give you insight to the "Model lodging Houses"

Hi Maureen,

There is a Hospital Street in Coatbridge, which is where my relation died - I think it's Coatdyke or Coathill Hospital His usual residence was given as the Model Lodging House, which makes me think that it was two different places.

I'm going to contact the local library in Coatbridge and see id they have any info. I'll put an update on here in case anybody else is wondering!

Best wishes

Hi Brian,

I think Coathill Hospital on Hospital Street is over by the Whifflet rather than in Coatdyke.

I recognize the name of the 'Lamont' and am sure I have a certificate somewhere...unfortunately, I can't find it. There was also the Trades Hotel which was in Coats Street, Coatbridge which could possibly have been a 'Model'. I do remember asking my mother about either the 'Lamont" or the Trades Hotel a few years ago and and she mentioned that it was probably the 'Model' where all the single or poor men lived.

There was a Model Lodging House that was uninhabited on the 1881 census...Enumeration District 16, maybe they rebuilt that one at one point...

I'd be interested to know what you come up with!

Hi Anne,

Of course it's Coathill  - I should really put the laptop away at bedtime.... I had to walk past the hospital tonight on my way home from work to make sure and realised as soon as I saw the sign that Coatdyke is somewhere else entirely!

Maureen - I also didn't thank you for the link to the Glasgow Story. I've now got a good leaflet on the Model Lodging House principles from the Heatherbank Museum.

Best wishes

My great grandfather lived in the Lamont Model Lodging House and died at Coathill Hospital (also I believe referred to as the Old Monkland Home Hospital). His residence address that we had was 60 Buchanan Street Coatbridge Scotland which I assume was the address of the Lamont Model Lodging House.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the additional information, it's very helpful.

Buchanan Street is the street that the Time Capsule is now on, behind and parallel to Bank Street.

I'll need to go and find some old maps now...... :D

Lamont house was probabaly the Model lodging house in Buchanan Street(now demolished)Now would be called homeless unit.Coathill Hospital is in Hospital Street. It too had a"Poor House"attached for females(now part of the hospital.A scary place as had big walls all around it(alkso now demolished...)So your relative was probably a resident and when ill taken to the hospital hence the different addresses.Go to Google maps and put in Hospital Street or Buchanan Street to see current views.Hopes this helps.

Hi Thomas,

Welcome to TalkingScot!

Thanks for the confirmation of the Lamont being on Buchanan Street. I haven't looked for more information since posting my original query and I must get out to the Local Studies Library in Airdrie to see if they have any photographs.

Best wishes
