Poorhouse lookup please

Post by crayspond » Mon Nov 10, 2008 9:35 am

Hi to all,
I would be grateful if anyone is going to the Mitchell could have a look in the Poorhouse records for the following family. Alan kindly found me this newspaper cutting and it seems the family will have been left destitute after his suicide.
It may also give me more info re their whereabouts after he died.

Here is the Mcfarlane household in 1851 before his death.

Dumbarton Road Bruce Place, Partick (Govan parish)
Dugald McFarlane 35
Margaret McFarlane 31
Isabella McFarlane 14
Margaret McFarlane 7
James McFarlane 5
Dugald McFarlane 2
Elisabeth McFarlane 8 Mo
William Wylie 21 (lodger)

Glasgow Herald (Glasgow, Scotland), Friday, October 17, 1856
Melancholy Case of Suicide.—On Wednesday evening, about half-past five o'clock, a man named Dugald M'Farlane, a saw sharper to trade, and residing in Partick, committed suicide by leaping into the river about a mile below Partick. The act was observed by several labourers, who were at work in the vicinity, but before they could render any assistance, the unfortunate man had disappeared. The body was recovered in about ten minutes afterwards, but life was extinct. Deceased, who was in a desponding state of mind, consequent on the unsuccessful issue of a law case, has left a widow and six children, five of whom are unable to earn their livelihood.

Thanks in advance,
Ailsa

I'm not getting there much these days Ailsa but I'll keep it in my wee book for when I do.

Let me know if anybody else gets it first.

Regards,
Annette

Hi Ailsa,

No joy I'm afraid.

Either they didn't apply for Parish help or the book hasn't survived.

Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette,

Thank you very much for looking - much appreciated. I think the family were split up and lived with various members of the family. James (my gt gt grandfather) went to Ireland and i think married Jane Dixon there (although i have yet to find a record of this).
I wonder why he went there circa 1873 (first child Elizabeth) was born in Newtownards Bangor, Down. Maybe it was work that attracted him - who knows, but by 1883 he was back in Glasgow - family in tow.

I will have to keep looking!

Ailsa
