North Prison, Glasgow St. Mungo

Is it possible to find out what crime was committed by my ancestor who was in North Prison, Glasgow St. Mungo during the 1851 Census. His occupation in prison was listed as a 'Tailor'.
I have proof of him and his family in the 1841 Census, but then only his wife and children are shown in following census's.
I would welcome any suggestions regarding the reason for his imprisonment.

Have you tried searching his name on the National Archives of Scotland site? http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/

There are many mentions of criminal cases there. If you do find a mention, you can request a copy.

In 1851 the population of North Prison was 629.
Civil: M 13, F 0.
Criminal untried: M 62, F 43.
Criminal convicted: M 248, F 263.

Included in Civil would have been debtors.

In North and South prisons there were a total of 83 males and 32 females under Sentence of Transportation. Of those 69 males and 19 females were considered Fit for Transportation.

Maybe he was given a free sea voyage to Western Australia, or maybe even Tasmania.

The possibilities are endless, do you have a name for him? His case may have been mentioned in the newspapers. Where did he live prior to 1851?
