Hello Cathy,

Unusually, it seems, there are substantial surviving records for Kyle Union Poorhouse. These are held by Ayrshire Archives. Is that where you got the information about the absconding? You would think that anything worth knowing would be included in those records. http://www.scan.org.uk/knowledgebase/to ... _topic.htm

According to this Scottish Poorhouse Wiki https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_poorhouse

“Officially there were five groupings applied to inmates: children less than two years of age; girls under fifteen years old; boys under fifteen years old; male adults over fifteen years old; and female adults over fifteen years old. Most children, around 80–90 per cent, who may have required long-term care were more often fostered, or boarded out as it was known at the time.“

So a lot will probably depend on the age of the child and the time period involved. Probably the only way to find out for sure, if you haven't already done so, would be to check the poorhouse records.

All the best,
Alan
