South Sawmillfield Mill and "Rosie's Home" records

Hi there,

My Great Grandfather William Buchanan died at 6 Burn's Street, Glasgow in 1954. I have recently discovered that this was actually where South Sawmillfield Mill was located and a dosshouse locally know as "Rosie's Home". I have had no luck finding out where William was buried and believe, due to where he died, that he is likely buried in an unmarked grave shared by many other past occupants of the dosshouse probably in a nearby cemetery.

I wondered if it is known which cemetery this actually was, and if anyone had any advice on how I would go about finding out where the grave location is?

Unfortunately, I don't live in Scotland so my research has had to be purely online based otherwise I would have done some footwork myself.

Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Andrew :)

Hello Andrew,

See the 1940-41 Glasgow Directory, 6-12 Burns Street was officially known as Garscube Road Home. https://archive.org/stream/postofficean ... 0/mode/2up

There's an 1890s description of the home in this thread. viewtopic.php?t=14020

Some Glasgow burial registers are online at Familysearch as per this article. http://britishgenes.blogspot.com.au/201 ... nline.html

If he was a pauper I think his burial would have been the responsibility of the council rather than the owner of the lodging house. That's unless his body was claimed by family etc.

But he would not necessarily have been a pauper and could have had employment. You could check the Glasgow newspapers for a death notice. You never know your luck. If there is one it would likely mention the cemetery. Browse to the likely dates.

Glasgow Evening Times, 1954. https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid= ... de=2&hl=en

Best of luck,
Alan

A bit more on this.

The Edinburgh Gazette has entries for two men who died intestate and without traceable relatives and who forfeited their estates to the Crown. They were, in 1933, Daniel MacLachlan, Rose's Home, Burns Street, Glasgow, and, in 1944, Bartly Fahy, of Rose's Home, 6 Burns Street, Glasgow.

There's also an entry in 1963 that a Special Resolution was passed at an extraordinary general meeting that Rose's Homes Limited be wound up. It appears this was finalised in 1965.

Hi Alan,

Incredibly sorry for such a late response to your posts. I have checked the newspapers for an obituary but could not find any unfortunately. I will look into your other suggestions now.

Thanks for your help.

Andy
