Hi rubeaz
Below is the description of calendering mainly from the old jute mills.

Calendering is a process in which a fabric is passed between heated rollers under pressure. Various embossed, glazed, or Moire effects can be obtained depending upon the nature of the roller surfaces and types of yarns or finishes used in the fabric.

but I suppose it would be the same for any materials.

yours aye

Are there any census years inbetween the two events where you could check up on the occupation of Wm Buchanan and "join the dots"?

Best wishes

Hi rubeaz. Could the second job description be 'Muslin copper' ? Muslin being a fine soft cotton fabric, gauzy in appearance, but woven plain. A cop is a conical ball of thread on a spindle.
