A & J Adie Jute Factory, DUNDEE

Post by Billiegirl » Fri Oct 10, 2014 3:26 am

Hello, I'm interested in any information about a Jute factory which was operated by Andrew and James Adie. I believe it was at South Anchor Works, Dundee, in the 1880's.

Does anyone know when it closed, and if a jam factory was then set up on the site? Thanks.

Hello Billiegirl,

In the Dundee Courier between the early 1860s and April 1897 there are many shipping reports of jute cargoes arriving for A & J Adie. The South Anchor Works had been advertised for sale in mid 1896.

The Dundee Courier & Argus, Tuesday, June 09, 1896
SOUTH ANCHOR WORKS, WEST HENDERSON'S WYND, DUNDEE.
These WORKS, Occupied and Possessed by Messrs A. & J. ADIE, JUTE SPINNERS and MANUFACTURERS, are for Sale by Private Bargain.
The Works Contain 3032 Spinning Spindles for Hessian Yarns with all the necessary Preparing Machinery. There are also 201 Power-Looms, varying in width from 40 in. to 60 in., and adequate Winding and Starching Machinery.
The Steam Power consists of a New Triple Expansion Beam Engine, with Three Lancashire Boilers, also practically new. The Power-Loom Factory is lighted by Electricity, generated by an Engine and Dynamo in the Works.
The Machinery has been well maintained, and is in first rate working condition.
A Detailed Inventory of Machinery, &c., may be seen in the hands of BELL & HENDERSON, Solicitors, 10 Whitehall Street, Dundee, from whom all further particulars and orders to view the Works can be obtained.

West Henderson's Wynd in 1895. the Adie works are no.42. https://archive.org/stream/dundeedirect ... 0/mode/2up

In 1899 the West Henderson's Wynd spinning works has new owners, McMaster. No sign of jam, perhaps later. https://archive.org/stream/dundeedirect ... 8/mode/2up

McMaster still spinning at no.42 in 1920. https://archive.org/stream/dundeedirect ... 6/mode/2up

Spinners still at work there in 1941. https://archive.org/stream/dundeedirect ... 4/mode/2up

No.42 is around here somewhere. https://www.google.com.au/maps/@56.4625 ... EFOSsQ!2e0

Hope that's useful,
Alan

Dundee Courier & Argus, Monday, July 26, 1897
DEATH OF A DUNDEE MANUFACTURER.
It is with deep regret that to-day we chronicle the death of Mr Andrew Adie, the sole surviving partner of the firm of Messrs A. & J. Adie, manufacturers, Dundee, which occurred at his residence, Lomond Bank, Hermitage, Broughty Ferry, on Saturday forenoon. Mr Adie, who was 74 years of age, had been in failing health for some time, but until within four or five weeks ago he had been able to give his own personal superintendence to the affairs of the firm. Deceased was one of the oldest manufacturers in Dundee, and by his fellows he was held in the highest regard. He was the last surviving son of the late Rev. Dr Charles Adie, minister of St Mary's Parish Church, Dundee, and was born at Tealing, where his father then ministered. Educated at the High School, he subsequently proceeded to the University of St Andrews, prior to his receiving a thorough training in mercantile pursuits in the office of the Messrs Edward. About fifty years ago, along with his brother, Mr James Adie. who predeceased him only eighteen mouths ago, he commenced business as spinner and manufacturer under the firm name of Messrs A. & J. Adie. South Anchor Works were acquired, and soon the firm obtained a wide name for the excellence of their manufactures. The works, as stated in the Courier at the time, were sold about three weeks ago. Both brothers paid the closest attention to the concern, deceased being more particularly engaged on the Exchange business of the firm. Naturally the loss of his brother was keenly felt by Mr Adie, so keenly, in fact, that he may be said to have declined since then. Deceased was charitably inclined, and his unassuming disposition prevented him from taking any active share in public affairs, for which otherwise he was well qualified. He was an ardent Churchman, and was a valued member of St Stephen's Established Church, Broughty Ferry. He has left a widow and three daughters and wide circle of friends, by whom his sunny and humorous disposition will be sadly missed, to mourn his loss.

Thank you very much Alan for all that information; I'm amazed that the jute factory ran for so long.

The reason that I'm asking about it is to try and solve a family mystery, because up until a few decades ago my family were receiving diminishing royalties from a "jam factory" in Dundee. My ggg grandmother, Margaret Leuchars, nee Barrie, owned property there and in an Inventory of her personal estate 1880 it mentions that she received "Annual Feu duty of 5 pounds payable at Whitsunday by Messrs. A & J Adie. Manufacturers Dundee." After reading the info you gave me, I don't think it refers to the jute factory site, but perhaps some other property she owned which was used by A & J Adie.

Margaret's son Alexander ran a confectioner's shop at 238 Overgate but he was renting that and it seems to have ceased trading in the 1870's/80's. That is the only connection I have between the Leuchars' and anything that might be called a jam factory. Unfortunately we no longer have any paperwork that might identify where it was
located. My Dad seems to think it was called Keillor's or something, but not sure.

Hi Alan, and thanks once again for those links - I have the cow in the shop one, and also an assault in 1868, but would be interested in the 1870 Sabbath trading trial of Jane, the graving dock accident and also the death of Alexander Leuchars, flesher, if you don't mind, and have the time. What's a flesher? Not sure if the last two are mine, but Alexander the confectioner later works as a ship's carpenter, so there might be a connection. You are great at finding these things.

I've been going through my records again (bit confusing with so many Alexanders!) and it looks like Margaret's property was all sold after she died and was left in cash to her three surviving children. I think some of this was invested in the jam factory somewhere down the line. I don't think this was Keillers after reading the above, as it didn't seem to be based in Dundee for long. Most of Margaret's property seems to have been in Scouringburn, so still haven't found the connection with Adie's, but I think the William who married an Adie might be an uncle or cousin of my great grandfather. Did her obituary mention anything revealing? The repetition of names throws me a bit.

Its certainly a fascinating puzzle :D

Hello Billiegirl,

There's not much info in the obituary, just a death notice.

Dundee Courier, Wednesday, January 12, 1859
DEATHS.
“At Dundee, on the 9th instant, Christina Adie, relict of the late William Barrie, Esq., town-clerk, Dundee.”

I've put the others on Photobucket so you can take a copy.

Thanks so much for that, Alan. Quite a hefty fine for those days, and an amusing day in court by the looks of it. I'll have to do further research on the two Alexanders mentioned but I'm pretty sure the ship's carpenter is mine. An intriguing insight into day to day life in Dundee at that time.

If I discover anything about the elusive jam factory I'll let you know. Thanks again for all your help.

Best wishes, Billiegirl
