Comparing the first letter of Lawyer / Sawyer to the entry below Isabella's, I would say he was a Sawyer. Look at the "S" in Susanna and the "L" in Leonard.

Heriot Mount was in an area which was dominantly "poor" tenements. Pictures can be seen at http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/0_a/0_aroun ... edykes.htm . On that basis, it looks more like sawyer than lawyer territory. Most of that area was demolished in the 1960s and redeveloped as the Dumbiedykes / St Leonards area.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Dennis

I agree with Andrew for same reasons he put.
By looking at other entries on page, it would appear that it is Sawyer.

I recall a similar query on SP many moons ago that turned out to be a sawyer.

Defintutely Sawyer.

And there's another reason, - the term "laywer" would be quite unusual in Scotland, - the normal terms would be "solicitor" or "advocate, or occasionally "writer" (as in Writer to the Signet).
