I recently found a very interesting MI in which the inscription identified my GGGgrandparents William McCullough and his wife Agnes Knibloe. It read "Erected By Two Orphans in memory of their three benefactors - 1st. Mary McCullough wife of William Brown and daughter of William McCullough and Agnes Knibloe Cardryne who died 15 December 1877 aged 87 years and 2nd Robert Brown husband of the above who died 13 february 1888 aged 83 3rd mary Brown daughter of the above who died 25th December 1904 aged 72.

Mary McCullough was one of my GGgrandaunts obviously BUT Who were the Two Orphans, and what did she and her husband and daughter do to merit such a lovely and comprehensive inscription?

I would appreciate any help.

From the 1851 census I would guess one of them to be Janet Jamieson born 1847 at Kirkmaiden.

Annette

Hi BangBilly,

[TS_welcome]

The child Annette found in the household in 1851 is a definite possibility. The only others I see from looking at further censuses are actually illegitimate grandchildren.

Grandson Robert Brown, born Neilston, Renfrew in abt 1852, who is with them in 1861, is the son of William Brown and Margaret Lochead according to the IGI. William Brown, son of Robert and Mary, was a lodger in the house of Margaret Lochead in 1851... He is married to someone else by 1861.

In 1871 Robert and Mary have another grandchild in the home, Elisabeth McGaw, born about 1862 in Kirkmaiden. I believe she must be the one in the IGI who was registered as Elisabeth Brown at birth, daughter of Mary Brown, no father mentioned.

So... I don't know if these illegitimate grandchildren would call themselves orphans-- probably not. Perhaps there was another child who the Browns took in between census years.

Very interesting puzzle!

All the best,
Sarah

Many thanks to Annette and Sarah for such rapid responses. I have followed up the leads you gave but have not got much further. As you say the "Orphans" may have indeed been illegitimate. Can anyone decipher where Elisabeth (or Eli[z]abeth) McGawn was born as mentioned in 1871 census?

As above, the Ancestry transcription appears to be correct and agrees with the IGI:

Hello Bill,

According to Ancestry it's Kirkmaiden.

As Sarah said this is the most likely birth -

ELIZABETH BROWN

Event(s):
Birth:
15 SEP 1861 Kirkmaiden By Drummore, Wigtown, Scotland

Parents:
Mother: MARY BROWN

Annette

Hi everyone, I know this is an old post, but thought I'd ask anyway! I believe the Janet Jamieson mentioned here is my gggrandmother and I have been struggling to find a birth record for her. I have the census records which give her birthplace as kirkmaiden, and she married John McGaw McColm on July 24th 1873 at Cardryne but I've been unable to find any birth record. Anyone out there able to help

Carol

Hello Carol and [TS_welcome]

On her marriage record, what parents' names did she give? Could this be her birth record in the church register (found on scotlandspeople.gov.uk)?

Surname: MCCHLERY
Forename: JANET
Parents: JOHN MCCHLERY/JANET JAMIESON FR435 (FR435)
Date: 30/03/1847
Parish number: 890/
Ref: 30 69
Parish: Kirkmaiden

I haven't looked at the original to see if it mentions whether or not her parents were married. If not, then she might have been known by her mother's surname.

NO! Sorry, I should have checked before posting, but that Janet is with her parents in the censuses :( So back to the drawing board... I hope her marriage record has some hints.

Best wishes,
Sarah

Hi everyone, especially Sarah if you're still about. So I'm on my summer holidays and decided to do some more hunting!

From Janet's marriage certificate her parents were Robert Jamieson, whose occupation is writer. Her mother is listed as Elizabeth McBryde. Elizabeth's occupation is listed as a domestic servant. Unlike the other listings, there is no notation indicating that mcbryde is her married surname but i do have a possible marriage date for them.

I did a search and found 2 children on Family Search.

Mary Jamieson b.16/1/1844, no birthplace given, and christened 26/04/1844 in Kirkmaiden.

Thomas jamieson, 31/05/1858 in Clyde, Glasgow

I also found a possible marriage for Robert and Elizabeth, 28/10/1836 in Gorbals, Lanarkshire

I'm only using freebie sites, but a hunt through Scotland s people didn't throw up any results. So i appear to be no closer to a birth for Janet. All records i have for her show her birth year consistently as 1846.

Her death certificate confirms her parents and their occupations.

I'll keep looking, if anyone has any other ideas, let me know!
