Greenock Cemetery/Mary Greenlees Smith
My g-g grandmother, Mary Greenlees Smith died on the 6th of October 1899 in her 90th year, while residing at No. 19 Nelson Street, Greenock. I have no record of where she is buried, but as Greenock Cemetery is nearby perhaps she is there. There were also burial grounds associated with the Infirmary and Hospital between Inverkip Street an Duncan Street which are not far away. Mary had been a widow for over 40 years and was very poor; worked as a washer woman until her sons were old enough to look after her. I do not know why she was in Greenock as she had left that town before 1860 and moved to Gorbals with her sons, but something brought her back, perhaps her Greenlees relatives gave her a place during her final days. I have searched the Watts Library records for an obituary but no luck. Any help in locating her grave and/or what was at No. 19 Nelson Street in 1899 would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, I am--

Hi Randolph,
I have the phase1 MI's CD for the Greenock cemetery and I don't see a Mary Greenlees Smith there. However she could be in the phase11 CD which I haven't purchased yet. She could also have an unmarked grave.
There is only one Greenlees listed and I've taken note in case they could be relatives of yours.
Greenlees – John C. Greenlees died 7th June 1971 aged 74, Wife Elizabeth W. Renfrew died 11th March 1932, daughter Nessie died 22nd January 1996 aged 72 Section 3E lair 76
You can also contact the Greenock Cemetery at 1 South Street and they will check to see if she is buried there. I believe there is now a small fee for lookups.
Regards,
Ina

Hello Randolph and
In 1901 19 Nelson St appears to be a tenement with a number of families living there - I count 7 heads of household. Hard to know who was living there in 1899, but the surnames in 1901 (including visitors) were:
Borland
Drummond
Mcarthur
Mcnair
Miller
Patrick
Ramage
Watters
Wink
Who was the informant on her death certificate?
All the best,
Sarah

Hello Randolph,
You can search the Inverclyde Council site for “19 Nelson Street” and get results from the Watt Library’s BMD index. (There may be some duplication and some links may be to an earlier version of the index and may not work) http://www.google.com.au/search?q=%2219 ... mages&tbs=
There seem to have been births, deaths and maybe marriages there, it sounds like a tenement, as Sarah suggested.
19 Nelson Street appears to be about here. Buildings are old but I’m not sure how old. http://maps.google.com/maps?t=h&hl=en&i ... ,,0,-10.69
All the best,
Alan

Re: Greenock Cemetery/Mary Greenlees Smith
I want to thank Ina, Alan, Sarah and Kathy for their help in finding the final resting place of Mary Greenlees Smith. Alas, after tracking all the suggested leads I am still without an answer, but will not give up just yet---let it rest a while and then try again. Thanks everyone again.
Best Regards, Randolph

Hello
I have a few relatives whom I believe may have been buried in the Greenock Cemetery. Reading through this thread I realise that there is a CD that one can purchase? Where would I source that or is the site searchable online?
I am looking at Neil Braceland's (Briesland/Bryceland) Died 1884, Susan Coyle Died 1881, Catherine McGinniss/ McGinty (various spellings) died 1861.
Regards

Hi Derbyfour,
I purchased the 1st CD from the Renfrewshire Family History Society http://renfrewshirefhs.co.uk/ You'd have to check with them and see if they are still available.
You can also contact the Greenock Cemetery http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/RFW/ and they will give you the Lair number of the gravesite. I believe there may be a charge for this search.
Regards,
Ina
PS Looks like an updated CD of the Greenock Cemetery inscriptions is still available from http://renfrewshirefhs.co.uk/
