Soutern Necropolis in Glasgow

Post by Laurence Turtle » Thu Sep 05, 2019 6:59 am

I have ancestors who I know are buried in the Southern Necrlopolis in Glasgow. I was wondering if anyone knows of a cemetery plan so that I can locate where they are buried. I was there recently and had no way of finding him. I have a letterr in Australia, but written from Glasgow, in 1939 saying that my gg grandfather (Henry Smith Hislop) was buried there on 19th April 1939. He had died two days earlier. I believe that his father, Dr Patrick Hislop is also buried there, as is his sister, Elizabeth Hislop. In the letter we received from Henry Hislop's solicotors, it says that he was buried in the family lair there.

The maps won't have names but rather they will have Lair numbers, I have copies of old maps of the cemetery the Central, Eastern & Western Sections - do you know in which area they were buried ?

The Southern Necropolis as you must have seen is large and unfortunately today a great many of the headstones have been knocked to the ground either by vandals or for safety reasons - this has rendered many of those unreadable.

I have just double checked the maps and they don't give individual lair numbers but do provide ranges of numbers and their locations.

There is only one Hislop mentioned for the Southern Necropolis on
http://www.memento-mori.co.uk/
An Elizabeth, buried 1910 possible married name of York?

These are only as mentioned above of legible stones when whoever survyed the place, not an indication that they aren't buried there, or that the ever had a headstone.

There is a group called Friends of Southern Necropolis, they may be able to help or provide advice where to find records?

https://www.keepscotlandbeautiful.org/l ... ecropolis/ - has a link to a website

Although their website has a list of Interments, but no Hislop names appear.

Also you can contact the Mitchell library in Glasgow, but I believe they are not quick at responding.
