David - thanks for the "lesson". I'm going to have to wait until I've a spare hour or so to figure it all out, but I will give it a try!
I have had a reply from SP this morning kindly confirming they are sending me a copy. Quick work
Jack - I have the 1851 census index of Lanarkshire from GWSFHS. I can look at neighbours on this one - but had not done so for Robert et al. But it does not have place of birth.
Regards
Ellen.

Hi Ellen,
Together these two 1851 census index CDs make for a coverage of ALL Lanarkshire.
Both are excellent if you have a lot of rellies in LKS (or Glasgow).
--
1851 Glasgow City (includes Barony, Gorbals, & Govan). No birthplaces. (issued by GWSFHS)
(*wildcards* can be used anywhere in a name etc.)
&
1851 Lanarkshire (this has all LKS except Glasgow). Yes, has birthplaces. (issued by LFHS)
(no *wildcard* search, but "Starts with", "Ends with", or "Contains" etc. can be used)
--
So is it worthwhile paying £25 for each of them when SP will (eventually) be putting them online?
To me personally - yes; no more index search payments; and can be used at leisure.
The "Family" or "Family & Neighbour" search will group family (and neighbouring) names together.
This would give you a fairly good idea of what images might be worthwhile looking at on SP.
The "Family" search is on both, and "Neighbours" only on the Glasgow, but it's very easy to find neighbours in the Lanarkshire too.
A look at the original page is still needed though to see who was all in a particular household.
Like most indexes there is the occasional error, but even those mis-indexed names can often be found with a bit of patience.
And as you aren't paying for each search you can look at as many names as you wish!

Morning all
I received the paper photocopy when I got home from work last night. What quick service, I'm impressed. And perfectly readable!
Robert Thomson, Grocer, Male, 75
born: Wrangham, Parish of Bothwell - 69 years in Hamilton Parish
(so David - your Wrexham was not far out
)
parents: Thomas Thomson, Weaver (deceased) and Janet Thomson, maiden name Muir (deceased).
married to : Elizabeth Scott (1st wife) Margaret Hamilton (2nd wife)
Children: (1st marr) James, dec aet 24 in 1829, John 48, Janet 42, James, dec aet 33 in 1847, Robert 38, Elizth 36, Marion 33, David, dec aet 11 in 1853. (2nd marr) Margaret 17, David 15, Christina 11, William, dec aet 3 months in 1854.
Buried: Parish Church Yard Hamilton.
Informant: Archd Naismith, Nephew.
So thanks everyone - most of your deciphering work was spot on!
The nephew seems to have everything pretty much correct, except that young David who deceased at 11 in 1853 should have been in the 2nd marraige list, as Robert and Margaret married in 1837.
So I guess he could be right regarding the birthplace, although Robert has himself in the census as born Hamilton.
Will have time to investigate further at the weekend (although SP don't have the birth - had a quick peek).
Must get off to work now.
Thanks again everyone.
Regards
Ellen.
NB - thanks Jack. I have the 1851 Glasgow one from GWSFHS, although haven't used it yet!

Hi Jack
Many thanks indeed.
Looks like Margaret was not Jane Thomson nee Taylor's mum though. I think she must be her dad's sister.
Oh I am so looking forward to the christmas hols to have some time to go digging.
Thanks again.
Regards
Ellen.
