Hi Maggie,
Hmmm... he's there, but it looks like a mistranscription and either he should be Dawson or the others should be Duncan... Or maybe, since everyone has so many names, he was really Richard Philip Duncan Dawson and the last name was just left off  Think he's probably not your man though :( If I understood your post properly

1901
41 Bernard St, Leith South, Midlothian
Richard Philip Dawson, 55, Head, born Banff, Ship Rigger
Helen Mary Hume Rae Dawson, 40, Wife, born Edinburgh
Richard Philip Duncan, 28, Son, born England, Engine Fitter
Margaret Calder, 25, Daur, born Edinburgh
Catherine Booth Dawson, 10, Daur, born Leith, scholar
David Dawson, 6, Son, born Leith, Scholar
Daisy Helen Rae Dawson, 4, Daur, born Leith
Douglas Dawson, 2, Son, born Leith

All the best,
Sarah

The chap at 41 Bernard St is actually Richard Philip Duncan Dawson as far as I can make out. Dawson has been missed out at Ancestry.

Annette

Hello Sarah
many thanks hmn... it's been so long since i did any research i'm a bit rusty i am doing this is for my daughters friend and working with only a few details starting with a marriage of a Grace McRae Duncan in 1923 so i thought i would look for Grace in the 1901 census and yes i found her in York age 4 with mum and 2 other siblings but no sign of dad who i think must be Philip McRae Duncan as there is a marriage in York in 1893 for him & Mary Jane who is shown to be Graces mum in the 1901 ,There isn't that many Philip Duncans on any of the census years .I think i will have to leave this one until i am less tired and can think straight
Thanks for looking at that one for me it's appreciated
kind regards maggie
ps thank you too Nelmit for looking for me

Hello Annette

Hi Maggie,
Have you checked out this one? I know his name is Peter, but was thinking that maybe Ancestry mis-read Philip. The middle name is suggestive.

1891
130 Parliamentary Rd, Glasgow Barony, Lanarkshire
Robert McLean, 39, Head, born Cromond, Edinburghs, Railway Carter
Isabella McLean, 43, Wife, born Hobkirk, Roxburghshire
Mary McLean, 13, Daug, born Selkirk, Roxburgh, Fruit Sales Girl
Robert McLean, 8, Son, born Cromond, Midlothian, Scholar
John McLean, 4, Son, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Peter Mcl Duncan, 28, Lodger, born Dalkeith, Edinburghshire, Cooper
Hugh Rowen, 39, Lodger, born Edinburgh, Midlothian, Cooper

All the best,
Sarah

Nope, sorry... that one is there in 1881 as well, so toss him out :(

There is a Philip Duncan on the incoming passenger list.I don't have access to details at home but maybe you've looked at that one Sarah.

The family in 1871 seem to disperse after that census.

Annette

Hello Annette & Sarah
i can't believe it's been so long since i was working on this project it just sortve got shelved but now time is running out to try to get something cobbled together my daughter has been giving me a nudge. Life just seems to fly bye and i was wondering if you two ladies would kindly have another look at this with me please ??

here are the facts that i know
Philip McRae Duncan married Mary Jane Smith in 1893 York
(i have now got the wedding certificate)
Philips father is recorded as being William Duncan deceased occupation publician
Philips age is given as 28 bachelor occupation Fitter

In the 1901 Philip is not at home with mary & the children

I have his death in 1913 York but with being an English death obviously no details that help me find out who he was or where he came from other than my hunch of Scotland with the Mcrae middle name.
any help will be appreciated
kind regards maggie

When I searched Ancestry for him again I found this :? -

Name: Philip Mckre Duncan
Birth Place: York
Death Date: 18 Apr 1917
Death Location: France & Flanders
Enlistment Location: Bridge of Earn, Perthshire
Rank: Private
Regiment: Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Battalion: 7th (Fife) Battalion (Territorial)
Number: 291467
Type of Casualty: Died of wounds
Theater of War: Western European Theatre

Ok this has to be his son I would think.

This is the one we found earlier - parents William Duncan and Isabella McKie/Mcrae in 1871 at Dalkeith, Midlothian.

William Duncan 33
Isabella Duncan 26
Henrietta Duncan 9
Philip Duncan 5 born Dalkeith
Agnes Duncan 4
Isabella Duncan 2
Robert Duncan 1 mo
Marin Mcrae 12
Adam Deans 21
James Borron 24

and here he is again in 1881 still at Dalkeith-

Robert Atkinson 36
Agnes Atkinson 35
Robert M Atkinson 7
Elizabeth P Atkinson 5
Alexander Atkinson 3
William Atkinson 5 Month
Philip Duncan 16 born Dalkeith, Grate Fitter in Iron Works

Regards,
Annette

Hello Annette & Andrew
Thankyou both very much for your help it is appreciated
yes i agree that is his son i had looked at it on ancestry but had only paid to look at 2 pages(being stingy with credits and trying to make them stretch out) as the 2nd page said he was discharged from service after 31 days
Not likely to become an efficient soldier was the reason recorded .Your information shows that i was wrong not to look at the rest of the document .How very sad that he gave his life for his country and paid the ultimate price when they had classed him as being inefficient i will download the rest of the document when i have done this thankyou so much for pointing it out.

as for his father yes i have him in the 1871 census and the 1881 its the 1891 & 1901 that remains a mystery to his wherabouts he was in York in 1893 for his marriage so in 1891 he could possibly have been still in Scotland But his wife & children where home alone in 1901 in York.
I have had a look at his parents marriage in 1862 and found their deaths in 1871 & 1876
Philips occupation on the marriage cert in 1893
is Fitter father recorded as William occupation publican though Williams occupation is a bootcloser on both his marriage & death certs so not alchol related at all.
Thankyou both once again kind regards maggie
