Where is George Lindsay in 1891?

Post by ficam » Sun Nov 28, 2010 2:36 am

Anyone got any ideas to find my ancestor George Lindsay in the 1891 census? I have found him ( and all his family) in every other census; so although they were tinsmiths and hawkers and moving around the country, they all seem to be very conscientious about census returns.

George should be with his "wife" Janet or Jessie McMilne/McMillan. He is in the Old Lime Kilns, Bilbohall in 1881 with his family and dies in 1898 in a cave in Covesea, Lossiemouth - Jessie is with him then and according to the article in the local papers at the time reporting his death, Geordie and Jessie lived on and off in the cave ( which had a door and windows by the look of the picture accompanying the article!) for the previous 11 years - but I cannot find them there or anywhere in the 1891 census....
Thanks

Hi ficam,
I guess nobody has been able to find them! As I'm sure you know, his son and family were in Old Machar in 1891, but no sign of George and Jessie. Either they didn't get counted, or there is some major problem with the transcription (ages off, birthplaces off, etc.) I'll bring this back up to the top in case anyone else gets lucky!

All the best,
Sarah

I had a look for this the other day but the only possible I could see was for a Jessie Lindsay born 1822, Melrose at St Cuthbert's Poorhouse, Edinburgh.

Here are 2 families enumerated at Cove Sea Cave in 1891.

Charles McPhee 41 Travelling Tinsmith
Isabella McPhee 43
Edward Mullon 17
George Mullon 14

William McPhee 31 Travelling Tinsmith
Betsy McPhee 23
James McPhee 5
Isack McPhee 4
Joan McPhee 2

Annette

Hi all,

Anyone know where in Dumfries Janet/Jessie was born? Found this one on the 1891 census:

1891 Scotland Census
Name: Janet Lindsay
Age: 67
Estimated birth year: abt 1824
Relationship: Visitor
Gender: Female
Where born: Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire
Registration Number: 646/3
Registration district: Partick
Civil Parish: Govan
County: Lanarkshire
Address: No 11 Broomhill Terrace West
Occupation: Private Means
ED: 22
Household schedule number: 172

Private means might be a bit unusual for a peddlar's wife, but who knows?

There is also at least one family tree on Ancestry which has George Sr.'s parents as Robert Lindsay and Janet McMilne!

Thanks guys - the Janet Lindsay born in Dumfries is not my Janet although they are all never very consistent with where they were born so I may be wrong there!!
The McPhees who were in the cave were relatives - Charles and William were the brothers of George's grandaughter's husband.

And I too have been unable to find Janet in the 1871 census - although I have found a few charges for drunken and disorderly behaviour so it is perhaps not beyond the bounds of possibility that she was in jail somewhere!!

And I agree that there are many family trees with these guys in there with a LOT of variations!! The McPhees and the Lindsays seem to intermarry at a terrific rate but everyone has a different idea of who married who!! George himself was originally "married" to a Betsy McPhee according to a very distant relative in Canada but I can find no trace of her . He then got together with a Mary McArthur who for a long time I believed to be the mother of his children , but apparently it was Betsy...

But if you search for Lindsay /McPhee marriages you get a bewildering array!!

I get a headache every time I sit down determined to try to sort them all out and always end up giving up!!

Jenny is also Janet ( and/or Jessie!)

They are all the same person - George was also named as Geordie in the newspaper article shown in the Moray website....

Thanks for all your efforts folks..at least I don't appear to be missing something obvious

I appreciate that there has been a 9 year gap since you posted this query! George Lindsay was my GGGG Grandfather and I’m related via his granddaughter who married into the Mcphee family. I’ve only recently found about the family and the cave dwelling but I’ve been finding info in the poor relief records at Elgin library. I’d love to chat if you are still doing the family history.
