1901 Census

Post by tazzy » Sun Apr 22, 2012 10:50 pm

I'm wandering if anyone can help me find my Grandmother, Jane or Jean Brown on the 1901 Census.
She was born in Meadowflatt, Covington, Lanarkshire on 9th August 1883.
I think I found her on the 1911 Census in London, although her place of birth was listed as Dunsyre, which is where her Mother was born. The butler filled in the census form
She was a tablemaid and that's all I know about her. She married my Grandfather in

I did find a Jane Brown in the West Midlands but all it says that she was born in Scotland.
I would be forever grateful if I could find out where she was.

Hello tazzy and welcome to Talking Scot!
With a name like Jane Brown we need all the clues we can get :D Who were her parents? Is this the family in 1891?

Bogside Cottage, Stonehouse, Lanarkshire
Jas Brown, 31, Head born Carstairs, Lanark, Gardner
Agnes Brown, 30, Wife, born Dunsyre, Lanark, Gardner Wife
Jane Brown, 7, Daur, born Covington, Lanark, Scholar
Geo Brown, 5, Son, born Dunsyre, Lanark, Scholar
Isabella Brown, 3, Daur, born Covington, Lanark
Agnes Brown, 1, Daur, born Stonehouse, Lanark

Have you found the rest of the family in 1901?

All the best,
Sarah

Could she be this one, a visitor in the home of Alice Wilson? If I had the right family above in 1891 then it is easy to see how her birthplace could have been given as Stonehouse.

111 Eddlewood Rows, Hamilton, Lanarkshire
Alice Wilson, 68, Head, born Blackadder
Robert Wilson, 25, Son, born Arondale parish, Lanark, Colliery Labourer
Peter Wilson, 26, Lodger, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Colliery Brakesman
Margaret Wilson, 19, Wife, born Dalserf, Lanarkshire
Jane Brown, 17, Visitor, born Stonehouse, Lanarkshire

Best wishes,
Sarah

Nothing that I can see in Scotland, but there's this in England, - presumably the one that you've already found.

Stretford
Ecclesiastical parish: Old Trafford St Hilda
County: Lancashire
Country: England

Name Age
John H Corson 54 Wesleyan Methodist Minister, b. Marykirk Westmoreland
Sarah E Ettoft 43
Hilda M Corson 22 (also b. Scotland)
Harold Corson 20
Frances Corson 18
Bertha Corson 16
Edith Eltoft Corson 14
Jean Brown 20 Servant, b Scotland

And that's all that I can see...........

BTW, that 1891 Stonehouse record show the correct parents

Dear Sarah
I think this may be my Grandmother I searched on SP for ages but couldn't find her. Yes, that's her family living at Bogside Cottage, Stonehouse. As you will see, some of her siblings were born in Stonehouse so it's possible she thought she was born there. She actually went to school in Stonehouse as I have her school record.

My 96 year old mother is still alive (Jane's daughter) but she didn't know anything about where her Mother worked so maybe she will recognise the name of Wilson.

Many thanks for all your help.

Evelyn
