1851 Census Inveresk Burgh ED7 .....

Post by AndrewP » Thu Jan 05, 2006 1:09 am

The image in the Gallery shows an unusual page to be found in the 1851 Census of Inveresk Burgh. As it is outwith the normal pages, I cannot imagine that it will be available online when that census comes online.

The enumerator must have had time on his hands. He has drawn a map of the streets in that enumeration district. And on that map, he has marked out with arrows the route that he took, and at each corner and a few other points, he has marked on the census enumeration schedule number of the property at each of these points.

If only more enumerators had done this... :-k

Unfortunately my scan of a print-out of that map does not do it justice. To make a better image of it here would make the file size too large to handle in the Gallery.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

More than a few will be thanking Mr Purves for that one.
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

Hi Andrew,
If Mr J Purvis wasn't a cartographer, then he missed his vocation - a quite excellent drawing!
Have you found him in the census to see what his "day job" was?
I've come across a few good enumerators who drew rough maps, but the details on them were nothing like this.

I haven't found him on the census (never gave it a thought). It is probably in the introduction pages at the start of that census book - usually the enumerator signs it off, often with a job title such as schoolmaster.

Hi all,
Just picked up on this posting as I now have an interest in Inveresk that I am searching and thought I would check out
Jack's query

On the FreeCen 1851 for Inveresk there is a James Purves stated as Teacher so that sounds like a probable!.
