Hi Merlot

I've not had a go at the 1861 but did look in 1881 to see if I could tell if any were still around. I was wondering if they emigrated...but then I found this one....

Dwelling: 75 Finnieston St
Census Place: Barony, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203666 GRO Ref Volume 644-10 EnumDist 36 Page 2
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Neil MC MILLAN M 38 M Campbelton, Argyll, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Engine Blacksmith
Mary B. MC MILLAN M 32 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Wife
Occ: Blacksmith Wife
Thomas MC MILLAN U 13 M Dunbarton, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Steam Engine Driver
Mary MC MILLAN U 9 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Occ: Scholar
Neil MC MILLAN U 7 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Scholar
Floria Mc C. MC MILLAN U 5 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Daur
John MC MILLAN U 3 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son
Andrew MC MILLAN U 2 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son
Donald MC MILLAN U 1 m M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son

Father Neil's age is off...but place of birth fits...and having a daughter named Floria looked like Mom's name. If you're trying to track them forward then this might be a place to pick up some clues......if it's really the right Neil that is!!

Not sure if this helps but best I can offer at the moment :D

Best wishes
Jean

Jean,

Thank you so much for looking this up for me, unfortunately, it's not my Neil. I know that he married Ann/Annie McColl in 1858 (from memory).

I thought it would be straight forward  to find young Finlay, who is my g grandfather. I can trace him from 1871/1881/1891/1901 Census' but no luck with this one.

Thanks for your input.
Cheers,
Merlot

Hello Merlot,

Have you looked at Finlay Macmillen? The age is a bit out mind you as this boy is only 13.

Annette,

Don't be daft, I would have checked it anyway if I'd found it myself. I just don't know where else to look for this lot, might have to put them to one side (again) and concentrate on another branch. Do you have any idea if there would be poor relief records for 1850's Renfrewshire?
Thanks for your help.
All the best,

I'll have a look for him next time I'm at The Mitchell just in case.

Kind regards,

Annette,

Thanks for the offer. I'd really appreciate it.
Come pay day I'll have another go on SP, they must be somewhere.

Hello Merlot,

Couldn't find any applications for any of the family, had a look at a couple of Andrew's but not yours.

Annette,

Thank you so much for looking for this for me, it's really appreciated. I've just spent some more cash on SP and still can't find them on 1861 which is annoying cause I found them easily on the other census'. Maybe they went down south.
It'll be a bottle of the old namesake if I crack this one

Hi All,

Continuing on from this census, I have uploaded (I hope) the 1871 census for this family.
http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... p?pos=-402

At the bottom is Mr/Mrs Finlay McMillan.
By my reckoning Finlay should be aged 70 and was born in Glenorchy.
His wife would be 60 born in Campbeltown.
The "Mr" part, looks like it has a wee "S" on the end but I can't be sure.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Merlot
At first I thought that she may be living with her daughter...
but that can't be the same Isabella if she was born in Edinburgh :-k
Did you notice that Flora is also a widow by this time?

Jim

On the next page of this census is
Finlay aged 19 Drawer in pit (?), boarder and Andrew aged 22 shoemaker, boarder. It looks like Flora is living with her two youngest sons. I thought this was strange but maybe Isabella Stewart is her daughter. Thanks Jim for that. I'll check for a marriage for her. :)
I notice that Flora is a widow, however, I can't find a death for Finlay (now there's a surprise).
Thanks again Jim.
