Thank you Anne H for your kind welcome! Glad you introduced yourself before I read any of your posts, otherwise I would have been mightily confused!:D

Hi Anne,
This from the CD index - name as TARLTON, with the number the same as you have.
Looks like you need to contact SP.

Devestated - just spent £18 on SP excitedly looking for family.
Located only one family member.
Totally depressed, seems the only way can move forward is a trip to Scotland.
I acknowledge to being a novice but I thought I was clued in enough to locate some useful info!!
Woe is me!! Do I jump now or live in hopes??

Hi Andy,

You may have gotten the information for me, but perhaps forgot to send them on to me. Sure would appreciate having them.

I've been corresponding with a descendant of John Moran (who drowned in the River Clyde), she's given me some names to add to my tree. I think there may even be McCurdy's mentioned. Let me know if you'd like a copy of what I have.

Regards,

Ina

Thanks very much for verifying that. Will get in touch with SP and see how it goes.

JustJean wrote:I'm not sure of the reference you give for the district being 604. All the GRO references for Barony come under district 622.
The 1851 census has been numbered in at least three different systems.

(1) the original system that the census was made by came down from the Court of Teinds and was a three number system - county, district and parish.
(2) At some stage the enumeration books in New Register House were numbered 1 to 878.
(3) At some later stage (possibly when the books were first microfilmed) the GROS RD numbers were applied to this census which was carried out 4 years before the inception of GROS.

GROS and SP use the GROS RD numbering system for their indexing. Some of the census index CDs that are on the market show both numbering systems (2) and (3).

In the example quoted here, Maryhill (as a part of Barony Parish) was in 8/1/13 according to system 1; in book 604 according to system 2 and in GROS RD 622 according to system 3.

All the best,

Greenock records a problem? Re: Re 1851 now online

I'm having extreme problems trying to find anybody at all in Greenock in 1851 - whole families seem to have disappeared. I wondered if there was a particular problem with the Greenock records?

(One family has the unusual name of Knaggs, so I've done unrestricted searches - using all spellings I can think of - and the only ones showing up are the three who'd moved out of Greenock at that point.. )

As far as I'm aware there is no geographical bias, but that's really a question for SoL and GROS ........

Hi Jenny

Have you tried searching on the basis of the whole county of Renfrewshire, as opposed to Greenock?

Hi Jenny,
I can see only one KNAGGS family in all Renfrewshire on the GWSFHS CD index (names only).
But maybe you have this, and it's others you can't find?

Thanks Jack! Scotland's People was giving me the Glasgow three but not the Greenock, despite me knowing that the Greenock ones were there. There are also Blains in Greenock whom I have been unable to find via Scotlands People, but know they are there... But these are the missing Knaggs - just where I expected them to be. Thanks!

I have to be away for a few days, but will persevere with this on my return , to get the details of their household. In the meantime, might you be so good as to look for William Blain in Greenock for me? There should be one aged around 14, and his father, also William Blain, may still be alive. Mother was Mary, and there were older siblings, one of them (John) now married.

regards, and thanks again,
Jenny
