Thanks for the welcome.
Dennis Re my Whitelaw/Skirving connection
Earliest starts with William Whitelaw (coal miner) who married Janet Lambie 1815 in Kilmarnock Ayrshire.
They later turn up in Coylton with family.
Daughter Margaret married James Daniel in Kilmarnock 1849, sadly Margaret and James both died of Typhus within a month of each other leaving their family orphans . I searched the 1861 census at the Dick Institute in Kilmarnock and found the children within three different households . James and Jessie (my Gt Grandmother) were with grandmother Janet Whitelaw (widow) . James and Jessie later turn up in Glasgow .
James resided at Hunter St. Glasgow when he married Margaret Skirving (house servant) their marriage took place in Newburn Fife although in 1881 census it states Margaret was from Haddington, on marriage cert her parents were James Skirving occupation( gardiner ) and mother Margaret Fortune, their other children were born Whietkirk; East Lothian and Gladsmuir; East Lothian.
Howzat* need a coffee now Rita my user name ( variation of Margaret )

Hi Rita.

Was wondering if when Margaret married in 1880 that her age had pre-dated her parents' marriage.

Hi Dennis.
Sorry I don't seem to have details of Margaret Skirving's parent's marriage although my sister in England may have, the last time I spoke to her on the phone she said she had some other certs I don't know what family though she hasn't used her E-mail for a few months as she said "IT"
the computer is freaking her out again.

Hello Rita.

James Duncan & Margaret Skirving married
July 19, 1880 in Newburn Fife ( her age listed as 25, figuring she was
born c1855 )

Margaret's mom & dad James Skirving & Margaret Fortune married
30 APR 1859 Prestonkirk, East Lothian, Scotland.

Both MCs are on SP.

Hi dennis
Sorry for not replying sooner
Well observed.. looks like Margaret was born out of wedlock .
Although I have Margaret's siblings births all within the parent's marriage I don't seem to have her birth .
Rita.

Hi Rita.

I'm wondering if the 1881 census, following the year that Margaret Skirving and James Duncan married would bring us closer when she was actually born. If the census shows her to be about 21-22 then she's ok, if she's older than that then....

Hi, Rita and Dennis,
I am looking for a Scotland connection for members of my family, James and John Skirving. They were brothers and came to the United States with their mother just prior to the Civil War. James married Mary Jane Nicholson and their daughter Margaret Jane Skirving was my great grandmother. My grandmother thought they came from the Highlands but further research indicates they probably came from Haddington. Do you think there may be some connection to the people you have found?

Hi Karen,
Welcome to Talking Scot! I'm sure you'll hear from Rita and Dennis soon, since although their posts in this topic are 5 years old now, they both still visit the site. It would be great if you could find a connection!

All the best,
Sarah
