Hi all,

The only William Goudie born around 1862 in Ayr seems to be the illegitimate son of Janet Goudie. Have you checked this birth on SP Dennis? I wondered if her mother's name was given as her maiden name When william married.

Then I found this marriage - :D

WILLIAM GOUDIE

Spouse: JANET MCCOSKRIE
Marriage: 12 DEC 1829 Ayr, Ayr, Scotland

Pretty sure this is her in 1841-

Piece: SCT1851/612 Place: St. Quivox -Ayrshire Enumeration District: 7f

GOUDIE Sarah Dau U F 18 Hand Sewer Ayrshire - Ayr
GOUDIE Ann Dau U F 16 Hand Sewer Ayrshire - Ayr
GOUDIE Janet Dau U F 12 Hand Sewer Ayrshire - Ayr
GOUDIE Isabella Dau - F 7 Scholar Ayrshire - Ayr

There are 3 other illegitimate children, Annabella, Peter and John, born to a Janet Goudie.

In 1871 she is living with her 2 sons Peter and John. Annabella is with her gran.

Unfortunately the biggest hole in my theory is that there is no William living with her or the gran in 1871. Or maybe I have the wrong family completely.

Anyway better get to bed.

Kind regards,
Annette

PS
That Janet Goudie is still living in Ayr in 1881.

Janet Goudie, ms McCroskey died in Ayrshire in 1882. The informant was Archibald Brown, grand-daughter's husband. Does that help, or does it make for more puzzlement? :?

Janet Goudie (junior), a sewer, died in Ayr (Garden Street, St Quivox) in 1885. The informant to the registrar was a nurse. How reliable was her information? She named Janet's father as Peter, and mother's name not known.

In my mind, there's not enough proof to say that these two are, or are not mother and daughter for sure.

All the best,

AndrewP

I'm like a wee dog wae a good bone on this one!

Ann Goudie married Peter Easton in 1855. I'm positive this is Janet junior's sister as 2 of her children had the middle name of Easton.

A Janet Easton married an Archibald Brown in 1878
:D

Still doesn't help with William though. :? Found him in all census records except 1871 and no clues - except he did name one of his daughters Annabella.................

Annette

Hi:)

Where I'm looking at this from is if William was the illegitimate for Janet goudie and registered as so, in the RCE it has James Shankland as his father then could it be that since we can't find any record of William's mom using the maiden name of McCroscry/McCrosery that she made that last name up and James changed his name to Goudie in order to maintain a deception to William.

Thia is my family. William did in fact have a daughter called Annabella who was well known as Annie throughout her life. I grew up not knowing Annie personally but knowing of our families Auntie Annie, my Mum knew her well. My Gran is Margaret Goudie, daughter of Alexander Bowes Goudie, the son of Agnes Bowes and William Goudie. Alexanders wife was my great Gran and she passed away in 1987.
We have also looked into the illegitimate claim but there is a note to say that the childs father was listed elsewhere.
What I can't figure out is why Agnes was in Dunoon when she died and why her death took two months to register? She had at least 12 children, 3 died as toddlers, 3 just after marriage. One committed suicide, a family sotry passed down over the years which turned out to be true.
Agnes had several living children at the time as well as William so I wonder why she was in Dunoon.

Hi
And welcome to [talkingscot]

You haven't told us why dying in Dunoon was odd. Was she normally living in Glasgow in other info you have found ? Nor what date this took place.
Dunoon was a favourite place for health clinics and nursing homes especially if folk lived in the city. Good clean seaside air was supposed to be good for your health. What was the address given on her death certificate?. It usually says the address at which the person died and 'usual address' underneath that.
With a little more information we might be able to figure it out.
One of my wife's relatives died in Innellan just a mile or two outside Dunoon. This baffled us at first until we found out that her husband maintained a house in Paisley so that he could keep on his joinery /timber business and came over at the weekend. Some wealthier folk travelled over by ferry every day and commuted to Glasgow and that was in the 1880's.

Hope we can help you solve this one :D

It looks likely she may have been on holiday and then with a sudden death it was reported to the PF.
