I really haven't a clue! Perhaps one of the experts will help out with the question?

If you were looking then it should probably only be between, say, 1827 to 1830, and IF there IS a record then the most likely years could be 1828 or 1829.

ps Annette - seems it'll now be the end of July the Mitchell will be closing for a wee while, though they'll be trying to keep a bit of the Family History section going. Whatever that means! Maybe nearer the time they'll know what will be available.
Thanks for info re Mitchell Jack. I had my notebook and pencil at the ready for the summer.

Ah well roll on end of July.

Samuel Barnes

Post by LindaMc » Thu Jun 30, 2005 1:21 am

Hi Jack

Thanks for taking the time to look for information re Samuel's birth.

It seems strange that all the other children were registered and christened but not him.

Even on the 1841 Census I have John and Elizabeth, Lower Church Lane, Kilmarnock, with Margaret, John, Matthew, Robert, Joseph,William but no sign of Samuel.

I have his children, including Matthew who was born in 1862, the year of Samuel's death. The son Samuel (1858) was my great grandfather.

Thanks for your help.
Best wishes

Linda

Hi Linda,

Those census details - Samuel looked very much like Barns in 1851, but son John was as Burns.
--
1851 cens 605 (488) Ed 7 p 9 (Maybole)
Drumbae Cottage.
Samuel BARNS, head, marr, 23, farm servant (ploughman), b Ballantrae, AYR
Margaret ditto, wife, 21, -------- b Ireland
John BURNS, son, 1, ------- b Maybole, AYR
[the cottage was at Drumbae farm - head was farmer Peter Hazel]

And next door at Craigiefinn Farm - head was farmer Robert Hazel.
ROBERT BARNS, 14, farm servant, b Ballantrae, AYR
--
Quite clear as Barons though in 1861.

1861 cens 593 Ed 8 p 22 (Galston)
Kilnknowe St.
Samuel BARONS, head, marr, 32, coal miner, b Ballantrae, AYR
Margaret BARONS, wife, 29, -------- b Down, Ireland
John BARONS, son, 11, coal miner, b Maybole, AYR
Elizabeth BARONS, daur, 6, scholar, b Maybole, AYR
Janet BARONS, daur, 4, scholar, b Kilmarnock, AYR
Samuel BARONS, son, 2, -------- b Kilmarnock, AYR
Hugh BARONS, son, 9mos, ---- b Kilmarnock, AYR

Jack

ps, there is a 10yr old Samuel BURNS agricultural labourer at Maybole in 1841, but alas not yours. Looks like he is at Stair 1851 age 20, and at Irvine 1861 aged 32.
Maybe your Samuel was just mistakenly missed off the 1841 Kilmarnock census. Or maybe with relatives somewhere else on census night - hopefully he'll be found once the 1841 indexes are completed.

Jack

Thanks for the census info. Have you any idea when the 1841 Census index will be completed?

FreeCen are also transcribing it (and other years) - a major undertaking. Latest info on Scottish censuses is at,

http://home.chilitech.net/~mmjeffery/myweb9/index.htm

Just click on the County of your choice - 1841 Ayrshire is at,

http://www.gavin-service.com/~freecen/

So looks like it'll be a wee while till SP or FreeCen has all of Ayrshire 1841 online.

Hello Linda,

I had a look at the film when I was at The Mitchell but he definitely is not registered. I checked the years between Margaret 1826 and John 1831 (as Jack suggested) but the only Barran child born was Thomas in July 10th 1828 to James Barran and Betty McCredie.

Regards,
Annette M

P.S. Jack, The library will be closed from 25th July to 3rd September - just in case you need to visit.

Hi "the kiwi"

"The Mitchell" is The Mitchell Library in Glasgow, incorporating Glasgow City Archives, which include the Glasgow Poor Relief records, and many other useful records relating to the history of Glasgow and environs.

That apart, "The Mitchell" is the largest non-lending reference library in Western Europe (although I understand that this lending policy is currently being reviewed).

As well as the extensive, useful records of the Glasgow City Archives section of The Mitchell, there are many other resources of interest to the genealogical researcher in the main library, not least the history of trade in various areas, including Glasgow traders' extensive involvement in the slave trade, another component of which was tobacco from the West Indies brought back to Glasgow...... the so called "Tobacco Lords" in terms of the very positive effect as regards the economy of Glasgow !!
