Also, can anyone tell me what is meant by 'feuar'?

The house next door looks like family too.

I wonder if I could be cheeky and ask for help with a second certificate I'm having trouble deciphering. Since you've all been so helpful (it's in the gallery)!

This time it's an 1867 marriage certificate, David Callender & Margaret (McDonald). It's David's second marriage, as his previous wife Elizabeth died in 1863.
The certificate says Margaret McDonald, but she's signed it another name - I guess she's a widow? I can't read it, though. G-----?

I have:

David Callender, 37
Slater Journeyman
Widower
Margaret G___, 48
___ & ___
Widow
53 Clyde St, Anderston, Glasgow
William Callender
________________
(deceased) and
Isabella (?)
Ms Sinclair - ___
Alexander McDonald
____ merchant (?)
(deceased) and
Jane McDonald
______
Witnesses:
Malcolm Mc___
Charlotte Ramsay

Thanks for your help!

See: http://www.scotsfamily.com/occupations.htm
Feuar  Landholder under feudal system paid a feu (fee) to the overlord

I think you're right, Alan. The others on the page only have one number and "h" for hour. The "m" is scribbled a bit, but I think that's what it is.

Regards,
Sarah

I had a peek at the 1860 marriage certificate for John George and Margaret McDonald. Her parents are as found above - Alexander McDonald, Provision Dealer and Jane Sellars, both deceased. Again, Margaret is listed as a widow.

My feeling is that the witness was McNaughton rather than McLaughlin, but there is definitely still some doubt in that.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks again, everyone! That's intriguing about Margaret being re-married before. I wonder if that would have been somewhat controversial in those days.

With way society was set up in those days the best or only recourse for the majority of women was marriage.
It is not uncommon to see a woman marry three or four times in her life.
The same may be said for a man too especially if he had children. You may see them marry with indecent haste after the death of a spouse.
Life was hard & both needed the other oftimes just to survive.
