Thanks, Anne, but you have to admit that wasn't one of my more brilliant moments
Now I have finished the packing, braved a heavy snowstorm to get to the airport and flown to California where it is 50 degrees warmer and 2 hours earlier... If I wasn't muddle headed before, I am now!
I won't even attempt to answer any posts tonight...
Regards,
Sarah, the bleary-eyed

Hi Katrina,
I've been reading your posts on the Muir family, and I know it's a long shot, but this is what I have.
My grandmother was Mary Muir, born 1826. She had a brother, John who married Elizabeth Brown. They had, (among other children) a son christened John Brown Muir in 1854.
He married Isabella and they had several children. I know where all of them were up to the 1901 census.
The Scottish naming pattern can (but not always) follow certain rules :
The first son takes his name from his father's father.
The second son from his mother's father.
The third son from his father.
After that they take names from their gt. grandparents.
Working from this, it is quite possible (but not definite) that your John Brown Muir was related to this family of mine. They were all from the Barony/Camlachie/Coatbridge area of Glasgow, and some were bakers.
Unfortuneately, your John Brown Muir was born after the available censuses, and you could really do with his birth cert., which will give you his parents names.
I have looked on the 'Family Search' site and can't find John Brown Muir on the IGI. Sarah has found him on, I think, the Scotlands People site which is really the best for Scottish research. You pay £6 for 30 credits, then it costs one credit to see a search and five credits to view and download a certificate. Much cheaper than sending for an English one!(£7)
I can help you if you can get this BC, and if we match, I have loads of info. on the Muirs.
All the best, Sheilah x
