Hi Ailsa,
I looked up the 1851 census on another site. Margaret's birthplace was not transcribed well. Might it be Dunbarney? Two children were born to a James---one a Kath!
I looked at deaths for a Margaret Mcfarlane, other name Christie.
There was one possible match--a Margaret who also had another name, Wilson, alongside Christie.
She died in 1889 in Perth, aged 70 if I recall correctly.
I do not have enough credits left to view the DC, but I suggest you look at that.

Dunbarney, a village 3 and 1/2 miles south of Perth. Near Bridge of Earn.
On the Scran site there is a photo of a mid-19th century cast iron 'gravestone' in Dunbarney belonging to a Robert Christie. Another clue?

Hi Mairi,
I have already downloaded the death cert you mentioned - however it is a Margaret Wilson widow of James Christie, father John McFarlane I was a wee bit disappointed as i was sure this was her.
Thanks for looking at this for me - a fresh mind is always a help. When you say you looked up the 1851 census and Margaret's birthplace was not subscribed well - did you mean Margaret the wife or the daughter?
I can't understand why i can't find any of the children's birth certs in Partick, Glasgow especially Dugald jnr age 2 and Elisabeth age 8 months -that's why i asked if this would be a common occurrence. I thought if i could get a birth cert for one of the children it would give me more info on Dugald and Margaret. I may have hit another dead end.
Thanks again,
Ailsa

It's entirely possible that the pre-1855 births were simply unrecorded, since there was no obligation in Scotland, before 1855, to record BMD, but it is also possible that they were recorded, but under a denomination other than the Church of Scotland. Not all parishes were all that conscientious about maintaining records.
There is the possibility, as well, that they were recorded as OPRs, but that the records have since been lost or destroyed.
I don't think that it's unusual for a family to be missing from the OPRs, but suddenly to become visible in the statutory records, the former being optional, the latter compulsory.

Hi Ailsa
I ahd a wee go at trying to trace some of the other children on the census , but got quickly lost ..
I did find an "interesting" 1861 census entry :
Name: Margaret Stoker
Age: 38
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1823
Relationship: Wife
Spouse's name : John
Gender: Female
Where born: Perth, Perthshire
Registration Number: 644/7
Registration district: Milton
Civil Parish: Glasgow Barony
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 7 Clyde St
ED: 30
Household schedule number: 27
Line: 16
Roll: CSSCT1861_106
Household Members:
Name Age
John Stoker 40 Grocer Head Down, Ireland
Margaret Stoker 38 Wife Perth, Perthshire
Dougall McFarlane 13 Son-in-law Ap Baker Partick, Lanarkshire
Hellen McFarlane 9 Daughter-in-law Scholar Partick, Lanarkshire
John McFarlane 7 Son-in-law Scholar Partick, Lanarkshire
Si I wondered if Margaret & Dougald had 2 more children after the 1851 census , Dugald died and Margaret remarried ?
Sadly , I cannot see a likely marriage of a John Stoker to a Margaret !](./images/smilies/brick-wall.gif)
So I 'm not sure why I'm posting this at all !
Sally
PS I cannot find any of these people in 1871 or 1881 - perhaps Mr Stoker took his new family to Ireland ore elsewhere.

Hello,
Morgano, you may be right and i have to admit that i am not going to find any records. I have been so lucky up to now with my family research, i find it hard to give in!
Sally,
Thanks for trying the 1861 census. I do believe that they did go to Ireland at some point between 1851 and 1861. That's why i was trying to find out anything about the children before they left.
James is my gt gt grandfather, his daughter Ellen my gt grandmother was born in Ireland but she moved back to Glasgow. As you know it is difficult to find out much from the irish records.
Thanks for looking,
Ailsa
