Good luck with that, Jean

It took me ages and several bits of paper with diagrams covered in arrows pointing in all sorts of directions before I confirmed that one of my lot married his deceased step-mother's niece!

Brought up in opposite sides of the country, I still wonder if they ever found out they were connected!

The discs aren't giving any help with this one either. The only possibility remotely close to the mother's name that I'm seeing for children to a David and Jane is this one from Old Monkland.

SNADDON, John Christening
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 21 Mar 1822
Christening Date: 14 Apr 1822 Recorded in: Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Father: David SNADDON
Mother: Jane CEIL
Source: FHL Film 1066602 Dates: 1700 - 1856

Good luck sorting it all out, Jean.

Regards,
Anne

With the aid of a slide rule, abacus, calculator and many pieces of paper

We have the following senario:-

James Sneddon (1788) and David Sneddon (1794) are brothers.

James (1788) marries Rachel Burt and they have a daughter Helen (1811) who marries James Mitchell Snr and they have a son James Mitchell Jnr (1831)

James (1788) and Rachel Burt also have a daughter Ann (1809) who marries Richard Sneddon and they have a daughter Margaret (1837)

David (1794) marries Jane Kyle and they have a daughter Ann (1820)

When Helen (1811) dies James Mitchell Snr marries Ann (1820) his first wife's cousin.

I have uploaded The m.c. of James Mitchell and Ann Sneddon as interestingly it is shown that James is marrying his first wife's cousin! I've not seen that before.

Are you following this so far :o  :o

Then James Mitchell Jnr (1831) marries Margaret (1837) and they have a son James Mitchell Jnr. Jnr.(1856)

So back to the signature on the d.c. of Jane Kyle. It is James Mitchell Snr shown as son in law (Jane Kyle is his second wife's mother)

When James Mitchell's second wife, Ann dies, the informant is James Mitchell Jnr. Jnr.(1856) shown as grandson.

He is really the first wife Helen's (1811) grandson, but what the heck, I'm sure Ann treated him as her own, after all they were related!!!

PHEW

Best wishes
Jean

WOW, Jean...great work sorting all those cousins out. I should give you some of my lot to sort out.

By the way, I was looking at my Love family and came across a David Sneddon Love who is the great grandson of my Rachel Simpson, so if you come across any Love's in your lot, let me know!

Anne H

Hi Sarah

Yes I uploaded the m.c. as I thought it would be of interest to others.

Perhaps no one from admin has been around to approve it.

I'll wait a wee while and then contact admin.

Hi again,
Very interesting! And much more clearly stated than the "fourth degree of consanguinity" that I was struggling with the other day! Did you work out the relationship before downloading the cert? If so, it is a welcome confirmation of your research!

Cheers,
Sarah

That's very interesting,
Just one question:

The MC says that Ann Sneddon was a Widow when she married James Mitchell, who did she marry the first time?

Another Sneddon perhaps or did she revert to her maiden name?

These Sneddons do like to confuse us don't they

I'd love to say that I worked it all out before I found the m.c. of James Mitchell and Ann Sneddon, but I would be telling lies

As for Ann Sneddon's first husband, who knows???? I don't know where to start with that one. With my luck it is probably another Sneddon

There are so many Ann Sneddons around it is very confusing and my lot drifted between Lanark and Stirling all the time.

The children of most of the Sneddons are born in both places, going back to very early in the 19th century.

They even die in Stirling and then get buried in Old Monkland.

Best wishes
Jean
