Lesley,
The image won’t open for me as well.
The state of the Registers for St Cuthbert’s looks pretty good.
According to “Scottish Parochial Registers” (1849) by William Barclay Turnbull
http://www.google.com.au/books?id=aCELAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA55
St. Cuthbert’s—No return.—The session clerk informs me— "that the register of births extends as far back as 1573. From that period down to 1670, there appear to be only two blanks of a short period, and from that year downwards to the present time, the said registers are complete. The registers of marriages appear to extend as far back as 1655, with a blank between 1669 and 1683, and a slight one between 1697 and 1699, from which latter year they are complete to the present time. With regard to the blanks above referred to I cannot affirm positively, as at the periods mentioned, where they occur, it seems to have been the practice to register births and marriages in some of the books of discipline, which may account for the blanks not appearing in the regular registers. I cannot inform you as to the register of deaths, this register not being kept by me, but by the recorder of the burying-grounds."

Ancestry has them in Burnets Close, Edinburgh (St Cuthbert's Parish) in the 1851 census, by surname Glendenning, and the lapidary job transcribed as Lapedeerg. Peter (42) and Ann (46); children Ann (20), Margt (18), Catherine (16), Peter (9), Christian (6); and grandson David Pollock (3).
So according to the information given in the 1841 and 1851 censuses, the oldest surviving child seems to have been born around 1830-1831.
By 1861, Ann (54) is in Brown Street, Edinburgh with daughters Margaret, Christian and Catherine and two young children of Catherine's (surname Thomas). No sign of Peter - I am presuming he had died since the previous census.
All the best,
AndrewP

Hi LesleyB and Currie:
Thanks for posting that you couldn't open the file. I just changed over from IE to Firefox and I've run through the entire list of options for saving/sending/opening this file without success.
I didn't think that change should have left me in such a dither, but if you can't open it either, then I'll try the next one before I start pointing fingers at myself as the problem
)

Hi Rachel,
I had a look at Christian's 1866 marriage certificate, and there is what may be a significant clue there. The marriage was solemnized after Banns according to the Free Church of Scotland. The minister was a James Begg. A Google search for him finds that he was minister of Newington Free Church at that time.
The addresses given in the censuses and marriage certificate are all close to Newington, so it may be that the post-1843 children were baptised in the Free Church. I was hoping to find a surviving baptimal roll for Newington Free Church in the NAS online catalog. There is a plethora of records for Newington Free Church (mostly Communion Rolls) under record set CH3/1195. Sadly the baptismal rolls that survive in NAS are for 1885 to 1931 - too late for your search. Unless of course the baptisms were at some other church.
Do any of Christian's siblings' marriage certificates name any other churches?
All the best,
AndrewP

thanks for all the replies and help
Lesley, I will upload again, dont know what happened, unfortunatly it wont be for a couple of days as im on hols in the uk and wont have proper access till sunday when i return to Ireland, i will do it as soon as possible though!!
Sarah, you are correct, my mistake - edward was certainly not the eldest - ann was the eldest sibling born in 1831 - i must have been having one of those moments
Andrew, I have only found of one marraige - that of Catherine Glendinning to James McGegan 17th July 1868, in the parish of newington - united presbyterian church. On the cert it says she was a widow so the kids must be from a previous marraige, however I cant find a cert for that one.
thanks for all this help
