Thanks Jean and Annette,
If you are right then i probably don't stand much chance of finding them in Ireland ! I looked on freecen for Thomson and Stoker in 1871 but nothing came up. It may be the Thomsons' moved there as well. Luckily for me James decided to come back to Partick and had one child in Glasgow (all the others were born in Ireland) so i could find them after that, but the mystery of what happened to Margaret still bugs me !!
Thanks again,
Ailsa

Ailsa,
Was Margaret’s husband actually working as a Baker in Partick when he died or was he the fellow doing something else who met with an accident?
It’s just that in the Glasgow Herald between 1860 and about 1866 there’s a series of Wanted Ads placed by a Mrs McFarlane, Baker, initially at Peel Street and later at Hamilton Place, Partick. It sounds a bit like a widow running her late husband’s business. Following on from that there are various things for a John McFarlane, Baker, Hamilton Place (or Terrace), Partick which continue until the end of the Century.
It doesn’t seem to fit but just thought I’d mention it.
Alan

Hi Alan,
He was a Saw Sharpener and the following is the sad case of what happened to him
Glasgow Herald (Glasgow, Scotland), Friday, October 17, 1856
Melancholy Case of Suicide.—On Wednesday evening, about half-past five o'clock, a man named Dugald M'Farlane, a saw sharper to trade, and residing in Partick, committed suicide by leaping into the river about a mile below Partick. The act was observed by several labourers, who were at work in the vicinity, but before they could render any assistance, the unfortunate man had disappeared. The body was recovered in about ten minutes afterwards, but life was extinct. Deceased, who was in a desponding state of mind, consequent on the unsuccessful issue of a law case, has left a widow and six children, five of whom are unable to earn their livelihood.
There’s also an advert placed by Smith & Rodger, Middleton Iron Shipyard, Govan, in the Glasgow Herald, July 14, 1854, accusing a list of employees, including a Dugald McFarlane from 1st July, of deserting their employment. It warns other shipbuilders against employing them and there seems to be a threat of legal action .
Although it is strange that both the sons James and Dougald jnr were apprentice bakers - maybe she went into business? does it give any other names? she did have a son John also.

This is what i am faced with - i have put in the following search
You searched for: Surname: "m**farlan*"; Use Soundex: Off; Forename: "margaret"; Relative Forename: helen; Sex: "Both"; Age From: 30; Age To: 50; Year: 1861;
I put Helen in because she is sure to still be with her Mum.

Hi Ailsa,
Ancestry don't have Scottish BDM's.
I'm afraid we usually have to resort to the "stick a pin in one" (figuratively speaking that is!), bite the bullet and pay for the Scotland's People image.

Ailsa I'll be happy to share all the Ancestry census info you think you need to see but honestly I've checked all the Margaret's and none fit like the one with Mr Stoker!.
Can we jump back to the six kids for moment please. The newspaper article that mentioned Mr. McFarlane leaving a widow and six children. Have you managed to find names for all of them???
I'm coming up with possibles of ...
1. Isabella b. Perth abt 1837
2. Margaret b. Partick abt 1844
3. James b. Partick abt 1846
4. Dugald b. Partick abt 1849
5. Elisabeth b. Partick abt 1850
6. Hellen b. Partick abt 1852
7. John b. Partick abt 1854
and I wonder at the big gap in births from 1837 to 1844. Surely there may have been another child or miscarriage or two in there. Anyhow...if Mr. McFarlane died abt Oct 1856 then these all fit yet one of them must have died. Which one? Well I'm betting on Elisabeth since she's not with the Stoker family in 1861 yet this must have occured prior to statutory registration as I'm not finding a death on SP. Soooo...my attention is drawn toward Margaret. SHe's there in 1851 and not in 1861. By then she would have been about 17 so old enough to be working on her own...but where is she?
Wellll....there is this one in 1861 I kinda like the looks of...
Name: Margaret McFarlane
Age: 17
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1844
Relationship: Lodger
Gender: Female
Where born: Patrick, Dumbartons
Registration Number: 644/8
Registration district: Anderston
Civil Parish: Glasgow Barony
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 35 Hill St
Occupation: Cotton Bleach
ED: 35
Household schedule number: 51
Line: 21
Roll: CSSCT1861_108
Household Members: Name Age
Sarah Downie 40
Sarah Mofat 16
Margaret McFarlane 17
but I'm not yet seeing a likely marriage.
Do you happen to have any idea what happened to James big sister Margaret?? If she survived and married in Scotland then that record might mention if her mum had remarried.
Still thinking....
Best wishes
Jean

Drinks are on the house
Annette has had the big breakthrough on this one....I thought she was going to make the announcement but she seems to have flit from the forum...
Ailsa you simply must run to SP and view the birth of Isabella's daughter
1861 THOMPSON ELIZABETH LANG F MILTON GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/07 1349
and note the address where the birth transpired please and then compare that with the address previously posted as to where the STOKER clan were holed up for the 1861 census.
Case closed.
