Can you tell us where she was born, please and do you have a day and month? The only one I'm seeing on Scotlands People is the same one that Wilma found on IGI. Have you downloaded a copy of that original birth entry already?

Best wishes

Maureen.
You can upload it to Talking Scot and those with brilliant eye-sight  might be able to read it for you, see http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6496 [Adding an image - Uploading an image to the gallery] for details

or if it's a REALLY bad copy contact Scotland's People and they should be able to send you a paper copy.

Glad we've got you on the right track.

Ask him again after you've made him a cuppa [kettle] .

Abbotshall is an easier question to answer:

The Parish of Abbotshall is just to the west of Kirkaldy in Fife.

Hi Maureen,

Here is my attempt at this one.
  • 1861 May Thirty First At Abbotshall
Marriage after Banns according to the forms of the United Presbyterian Church
(signed) John Smith, Mason (Bachelor); 32; Falkland, Fife
(signed) Margaret Hay, Weaver (Spinster); 27; Falkland, Fife
Thomas Smith, Weaver and Mary Smith, M.S. Robertson
David Hay, Mason (deceased) and Christina Hay, M.S. Craig
(signed) William A Thomson, Minister at Bathfield Church
    (signed) James Hay, Witness
    (signed) Charles _____, Witness
1861 June First At Kirkcaldy, L.M.Macduff, Registrar
I am not certain about some of these, especially the occupations.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew

Do you think John Smith might be a weaver? That is what I read it as before looking at your transcription.

Best wishes

Hi all,

This looks to be them in 1861, so I'll go with his occupation as a weaver!

1861
New Road, Falkland, Fife
Thomas Smith, 66, Head, born Falkland, Fifeshire, Linen Weaver
Mary Smith, 67, born Falkland, Fifeshire
John Smith, 32, Son, born Falkland, Fifeshire, Linen Weaver
Margaret Smith, 27, Daughter, born Falkland, Fifeshire, Linen Weaver

All the best,
Sarah

Interesting how mason and weaver look alike in that handwriting! Had to go back to 1841 to find David Hay alive, but he is, indeed, a mason.

All the best,
Sarah

Reading from the registry, the occupations of John, Margaret and Thomas, all seem to be Weaver, with only David Hay, being a Mason.

The very flowery W on Witness is the same as the first letter on Weaver, William, and Williamson while M.S., Muir, Mason, Marriage, Minister and Coal Miner all have a very straight M beginning with a curl on the line.

Just a guess - could the witness be Charles Linten or Lister?
