As were the Episcopal records I saw in Aberdeen a few years ago. If the book extended back far enough with no gaps, then we could be reasonably sure that John and Margaret were not married in that church.

One thing: In the disputed record of Edward's second marriage, he says his father was a farmer. Could one have been a farmer in Leith at that time? I know that many areas that are now inner-city were once farmland around Glasgow, but am unclear about the history of Leith besides the obvious port activities. Mind you, that marriage entry is a bit odd... he also said his father's name was Alexander Malcolm Robertson and he gave himself the middle name of Malcolm  But he was the correct age, a glass maker (assume this goes with his "bottle maker" status in the censuses) and his mother's name was Margaret Moore.

Regards,
Sarah

Hi Sarah
Could one have been a farmer in Leith at that time?
Seems a little odd... obviously there would have been countryside not too far away, but a farmer actually IN Leith sounds a bit strange.

I'm sure you have much better things to do with your time, but there is a useful account of the history of Leith here:
http://www.electricscotland.com/history/leith/
- though I had a warning about a virus from my anti-virus software when loading at the site, which may just have been a coincidence, but maybe a site to treat with caution for now.

Best wishes
Lesley

There were farms in the landward part of the parish of Leith into the early part of the twentieth century.

All the best,

Thanks for that, Andrew. I believe you were in on the deciphering of the Alexander Malcolm Robertson cert :D So he could have been a farmer...

Interesting reading for a rainy day! I'm sure robbiej will have a good time going through all that! For instance, on this page:
http://www.electricscotland.com/history/leith/28.htm

Then we must not forget the glass-works, of which there were two at this time, the larger in the Citadel and the smaller in Yardheads. In the next century they were to number seven.

So that was where Edward was working. No time to read through it all right now  as I'm supposed to be compiling some data from my own family for someone on another board, as well as remodeling the bathroom  This retired life is exhausting!

Cheers,
Sarah
