Hi Anne,

One branch of my family tree (surname Downs) lived at Nappyfaulds from at least the 1841 census time to at least the time of the 1871 census. Nappyfaulds was in the Civil Parish of Falkirk, but that part of Falkirk parish was annexed Quoad Sacra to Slamannan Parish. So don't be surprised if you find Nappyfaulds in Slamannan parish in some records.

All the best,

AndrewP

Andrew, my Marshalls are Nappyfaulds folks too,

Robert and Elizabeth are at Nappyfaulds Rows 2 in 1891, but 2 entries above them is :
Elizabeth DOWNS, a widow, her daughters Janet, Isabella and Elizabeth a neice Jessie Oswald and her Brother John MARTIN

theyare farmers at Westerstonerigg Farm.

Any connection of yours?
Wilma

Hi Wilma,

Yes, Elizabeth (1861-1934; ms. Martin; later Tripney) was widow of John Downs (c1843-1888). John Downs was a first cousin to my g-g-grandmother (Agnes Thomson Sommerville, daughter of John Sommerville and Helen Downs).

I have some Marshalls attached to the Downs tree in the 1790s. I will send you a copy of that tree to have a look at and see if there is a link there.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi all,

I've been googling again!

A peesweep is a curlew.

Here's a website with some info on Nappiefaulds miners housing. Sounds less than lovely!

http://www.scottishmining.co.uk/414.html

Scroll down a bit to find Nappiefaulds. I think it said that this article was from 1875 so maybe things changed by 1884.

Hi Andrew,

I haven't actually done much on this branch yet, but will be on the lookout for any changes to Slamannan...that's good to know, so thanks for pointing it out.

Hope you and Wilma find a match somewhere. :)

Anne H

Hi Wilma,

There is a 16 year old Margaret Marshall, domestic servant on the 1881 census at Nappiefaulds with farmer Shanks and his wife...she yours?

By the way, you don't have a Margaret Marshall who married John Russell around the 1790's do you? They had their first few children in Dumbarton before moving to Larbert, then had their last son in Falkirk. I've had no joy in finding a marriage for this couple or anything about my Marshalls....one day, I'll get a break on this lot.

Anne H

Hi Carol,

Charming place, indeed (not)! By the looks of things, it was only the coalmaster, Matthew Hay and family and the farmer Shanks farmily living at Nappiefaulds in 1881, so looks like all the houses crumbled to the ground by then.

Thanks for pointing out the notes on miners housing, very interesting! At least the parents of my Allans seemed to fair better in 1881...they were living at the "picturesque region in Jawcraig".

I love this Scottish Mining site.

Anne,

It made me shudder when I read the bit about them laying in their beds at night listening to the miners' explosives going off down below!

My mother came from the copper mining area of upper Michigan. I've often thought that the whole Keweenaw Pennisula must look like swiss cheese underground from all the mining that went on up there. Never heard of the surface ground collapsing though.
