Hi Carol,
Looks like Palace Colliery Bothwell Haugh. Not sure about her mother's maiden name...

So the IGI birth was the correct one, but the 1901 census is not the right James, unless there's a mistake with his birth place.

Regards,
Sarah

Looks like the 1901 census is wrong then because James is shown as a coal miner on the marriage certificate which his father and father-in-law were also. His father should show up on the 1901 Census too.

But, hey, how many James McDonalds can there be? (one thousand, two thousand...)

Carol :D
Looking for: Clerihew, Longmuir/Longmore, Chalmers, Milne, Barclay in Newhills,
Munro, Cadenhead, Raitt, Ririe/Reary

Persistence pays, so stick with your search. I just found my particular John Brown (!) in the Ellis Island records. I had no idea how many John Brown's came to the US around 1905. Tedious, but I got there. Fortunately, it's a free site.

Couldn't the pen run out of ink on the registrar's name instead of the mother's!? :x

Thanks to Gardner (and Andy!), the family is easy to find in 1871:

Dumbrae, Inveresk, Midlothian
James McDonald, 40, Head, born Inveresk, Edinr, Baker
Georgina McDonald, 28, Wife, born Newbattle, Caithness
Mary B McDonald, 13, Daughter, born Inveresk, Edinr, Spinner at Factory
James McDonald, 11, Son, born Inveresk, Edinr, Scholar
Allison McDonald, 8, Daughter, born Inveresk, Edinr, Scholar
Georgina M McDonald, 3, Daughter, born Inveresk, Edinr
Elizabeth B McDonald, 2, Daughter, born Inveresk, Edinr
Gardner M McDonald, 3 mo, Son, born Inveresk, Edinr

But father James is not a coal miner and James is said to be born in Inveresk. No wonder we couldn't find them! However, it surely has to be the right family.

Regards,
Sarah

And again thanks to the brilliant choice of Gardner for their son's name, they are also findable in 1891 and Georgina is still alive then! So there is a very narrow window in which her death must have occurred, since she was gone by James' marriage in 1895. Her birthplace has changed, however...

1891
20 Dame Brae, Inveresk, Musselburgh, Midlothian
James McDonald, 60, Head, born Midlothia Fisherrow, Nett Worker
Georgina McDonald, 48, Wife, born Midlothia, Dalkeite
Gardner McDonald, 20, Son, borm Midlothia, Inveresk, Coal Miner
Annie McDonald, 17, Daughter, born Midlothia, Newton Grange, Dressmaker
Maggie McDonald, 14, Daughter, born Midlothia, Inveresk, Mill Worker

The only evidence of coal mining is Gardner's occupation. One must suppose that by 1895 father James was doing it too.

Regards,
Sarah
