Hi Linda
I know you have never found a marriage for Charles but I wonder if you've checked wee Maud's birth entry in 1900 to see what it says about her parents marriage?
Who registered Charles's death?
Regards,
Annette

Re: Death in Scotland
Hi Annette,
Yes on all the children's birth certs we have father Charles Edwin Wood and mother Maude, maiden name Baker. Purported to be married, but weren't.
Charles' son, Charles Albert Wood reported his father's death. I think I may have found a marriage record for Charles Albert so am going down that route at present. If I can't find ancestors maybe I can find descendants.

Re: Death in Scotland
I was wondering if perhaps Charles Edwin had been married before Maude and that's why he wasn't able to marry either Maude or Ann.
Strange that his son didn't know who his parents names.

Annette

Re: Death in Scotland
Hi Annette,
Charles Albert may well have known the names of his grandparents, but he's part of Charles' second family, not his first and that's the family I'm researching. His first five children all went back to London with their mother Maude, she later married and gave her maiden name and her status as Spinster when she married. As far as anyone knows Charles Edwin was last seen in 1911 by his then 11 year old son, the eldest of his first family, after that all contact is lost. They never even knew they had half-brothers.

Re: Death in Scotland
Hi Linda
I've been following this thread and had a wee look.
I know it might be a long shot but there is a Charles Wood in the 1891 census the only thing is his middle initial looks like an A. The age would be correct for your Charles and he is a Mercantile Clerk. He is at 2/4 Union St. South Manchester as a visitor. He is shown as born in Lancaster-Manchester. It was the Mercantile Clerk that got me thinking.
I've looked at Maude Adelaide Wood's birth in Glasgow in 1900 and it shows Charles and Maude as having married in London on April 17th 1897. Have you checked the other childrens births in Scotland and do they also show this date.
I've had a search for their marriage and can't find it either.
On Ann Archibalds death it says she was married to Charles and on Charles death he is Ann's widower again I can find no marriage for them either.
I'll keep looking when I need a we break from my own tree.

Re: Death in Scotland
Good morning Roy,
Many thanks for taking a look, I too had seen that entry on the 1891 and like you was attracted by the mercantile clerk, but I'm told [whether accurately or not I'm not sure] that Charles was a Drapers Assistant when he was younger and was born in London. I'm doing this research for a friend you see who's come to a dead-end so am reliant on what she tells me. I have found two entries on the English census of 1881 & 91 that could possibly be him, on both he's a Drapers Assistant, but on the 1891 he is married to an Ellen Wood, but again I can find no record of a marriage.
On the birth records of the children he had with Maude in Scotland that date in April 1897 is given on all as a date of marriage, but none of us have come up with a marriage record at all.
Pat, who I'm doing this for lives in Canada now, her father was Charles Edwin's eldest son from the first family, Albert Edwin, but he last saw his father when he was 11 and knew nothing of his father's parents.
It's a real mystery, Charles Edwin is proving very elusive.
Thank you so much for your help.

Hi Linda
Roy again
Do you have Albert Edwins birth record and if you do what information is on it.
The only birth I see for an Albert Edwin born abt. 1899 ( thats taking his age from the 1901 Scottish census) is West Derby putting them up in the Manchester/Liverpool area.

Re: Death in Scotland
Hi Roy, yes that's him, he was born in Liverpool. We don't know why. We're assuming that either because his father was previously married or perhaps because of family opposition the couple fled from London and maybe Albert was born en route to Scotland. Maude's background is of a family of comfortable means they were something in the garment industry, and it is felt by Pat that she was seen as 'marrying' beneath her...except they never did get round to the marrying bit...
Albert was Pat's father and he left the family home as young man and migrated to Canada, his mother Maude paid his fare, we have the ships record of that.Family story says he was ' banished ' from the family , but Pat feels there was more to it than that, she thinks he found out that his parents had never been married and that all was not as it seemed, sadly he died many years ago now so Pat is trying to piece together what happened within her family. I'm trying to help her...
