Alcluith, thanks for your interest and help. He was a lath-splitter by trade, living in Edinburgh, and I expect he will have found it hard to work beyond the age of around 60, so that would be c1896. Not a dangerous occupation particularly, but the cities were very unhealthy places and a lot of his close family, including two wives, died of phthisis (TB).
My mother's family are fisherfolk however, so I know from the tragedies on that side how dangerous the work was. Wish you luck with your searching.
