This could be Agnes and Mary Ann in 1901, with Agnes' age a bit off and Mary Ann's birthplace wrong (at least in the Ancestry transcription.) John seems to have been elsewhere on census night.

1901
169 Bouverie Ter, Port Glasgow
Agnes Murphy, 26, Head, born Ireland, Yarn Weaver
Mary Murphy, 1, Daur, born Ireland

This doesn't take us any nearer finding the death records, unfortunately, since presumably John was still alive to father the rest of the children. :?

All the best,
Sarah

Given that Agnes should have been ca. 32 in 1901, at least according to her declared age of 25 on her 1894 marriage record; and wee Mary was born in Scotland, it would be easy to discount this entry; never mind that Port Glasgow was hoachin' [see http://heritage.caledonianmercury.com/2 ... hin/001280] with MURPHYs, there even being several MURPHY families in Bouverie Terrace.....

Except that wee Mary Ann MURPHY was born 09Oct1899 at 169 Bouverie Terrace !

An object lesson in how the info in censuses can be wrong.

AndrewP wrote:Hi Jan,

John's 1919 death can be found on ScotlandsPeople. He died in an asylum in Gourock. His (new) son-in-law registered the death.

All the best,

Spot on. Again, an object lesson in how to interpret comments such as "the parents died when John [b. 1902] about 11 years] as 1919 is 6 years after the derived 1913 ! I was working on the basis of 1913 +/-5 years !

The 1919 death showing the place of death as the Parochial Asylum in Greenock, also shows John's usual residence as 3 Bouverie Street, Port Glasgow.

So that leaves the death of Agnes McAUGHEY/McCAUGHEY plus a wheen o' ither spellings ......... which has to be between the 1907 birth of son Hugh, and the 1919 death of husband John MURPHY, always assuming, or course that the 1919 informant got it right that his mother-in-law was deceased?

There is a minor difference in this 1919 death record in that John's father is shown as Edwin rather than Edward as on the 1894 marriage record, but that wouldn't worry me.

An object lesson also in terms of the power of the assembled research brains on TS!

Hi Jan

Many parishes had hospitals for their poor sick and some had mental hospitals except that they had little resources with which to treat mental illness.
In some areas several parishes shared the cost of such facilities. Sometimes they combined the Poorhouse, the Poor law infirmary and some form of asylum.
I don't know much about the early asylum but later it was developed into Ravenscraig Hospital.
Manic Nephritis is not a term I have have coma across (many of the diagnoses back then were not very clear by current interpretations) I would guess that anyone with failing kidneys might exhibit agitation and various other behavioural abnormalities as waste products normally excreted by the kidneys, built up in the body. This is a mere guess though.
The records from the Asylum may be held by the Mitchell Library though since it was funded by the Parish.

The Greenock Parochial Asylum was also known as Smithston Poorhouse. A few of my lot died there. It was actually a beautiful building see photo here http://www.art.com/products/p4173999216 ... wshire.htm

Ina

PS I have no connection to the artist. Just thought McFadyen would like to see a photo of the building.

Thanks Ina

It is a beautiful building. Just a pity that many of the things that went on in there did not live up to the quality of the building. Parochial Institutions were notoriously harsh in how they dealt with the poor souls obliged to live there.
