Hello Gary,

After 1950, that little gem of a newspaper, Glasgow’s ‘Evening Times’ is also available on Google News Archive. The death notice for Sarah is on 3rd October, 1955, third column on page 18. (Page 10 on the viewer) The funeral was private so there are no details of that. http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2 ... =frontpage

You’ll notice the much higher quality of the scan. With this sort of quality a search on the advanced search page with Evening Times in the Source often works quite well. If I search for Peter Sinclair I find the above mentioned notice. http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=MS ... lair&hl=en

If I search for Sarah Sinclair I find a notice, two years after her death, “in loving memory of our beloved Ma” http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=FQ ... lair&hl=en

All the best,
Alan

Hi Gary,

If her son gave the correct information to the registrar, she had three middle names, the first of which was the same as her surname. There was no sign of any of these names on either of her birth certificates (registered in birth district: Blythswood, Glasgow; and that certificate transcribed into the register in the parents' home district of Dumbarton). Similarly there was no sign of these middle names on her 1896 marriage certificate. So it looks like either she took on middle names some time after she was married, or that her son was mistaken when he gave these names when registering his mother's death.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hello Gary,

I posted something previously for you about this viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15851&p=126703#p126595 but here’s a bit more.

People researching Glasgow are very fortunate because there are two main Glasgow newspapers online in Google News Archive. These are The Glasgow Herald from about 1800 to 1990, and The Evening Times from about 1950 to 1990. There is also the Bulletin but with only about 1951 to 1960.

This is the search page. http://news.google.com/archivesearch/advanced_search Type the newspaper name in the Source box and the search terms where appropriate. If you only wish to browse the newspaper just type in the title. To find the Bulletin you may also have to type Glasgow as a search term.

The image quality of the Evening Times and more recent editions of the Glasgow Herald are quite good and can be searched using the search facility with a reasonable chance of success. Older editions of the Glasgow Herald have poorer image quality and the search doesn’t work nearly as well. However if you know the date of an event it is fairly easy to find the issue where it may have been reported.

You can also access the Glasgow Herald from about 1840 to 1900, with much better quality images and search facility, at 19th Century British Library Newspapers. Further Education and Higher Education students etc in the UK can get free access online from home via their institution. Residents of Glasgow can get similar access from Glasgow Library http://www.glasgowlife.org.uk/libraries ... /home.aspx while all residents of Scotland can get the same sort of access from the NLS https://auth.nls.uk/ldc/browse.cfm?by=subject&sid=99

It can be a good idea to apply for access from more than one source in case one becomes overloaded or whatever.

Hope that helps,
Alan
