Bill,

Name changes always complicate things! You have all my sympathy here. My grandmother's name was Munro. I've paid out a good bit to SP looking for needles in that particular haystack!

Don't give up though. You never know when someone else is going to pop up searching for the same family!

Looking for: Clerihew, Longmuir/Longmore, Chalmers, Milne, Barclay in Newhills,
Munro, Cadenhead, Raitt, Ririe/Reary

Good find Annette!

Still not seeing a death cert for either one and I'm out of time to work on this. Packing for a road trip to Colorado!

The Rooney information looks good except Catherine should be about 75 in 1891. I am still having a difficult time accepting the name change thing. Shouldn't there be a legal record of a last name change? I have read that many Irish immigrants changed their name and religion when they came to Scotland to "fit in" and be accepted but it seemed that Edward and Catherine were in Scotland for a while before this name change took place. There are six Edward Currie's that are in the Scotland death records between 1861 and 1914 so possibly he is listed there but if he is listed as McGorry or Gorrie, who knows ...

Hi

There is no need for a legal record of a surname change even now. You can call yourself anything you like as long as it's not for fraudulent purposes. At that time (unlike now) the state took very little interest in a person's life and it was rare for anyone to have to prove their identity.

Researching M(a)cKenzie, McCammond, McLachlan, Kerr, Assur, Renton, Redpath, Ferguson, Shedden, Also Oswald, Le/assels/Lascelles, Bonning just for starters

I thought that would be the case ... they should have known that 150+ years later their relatives would be researching them and kept the name given by their parents.
