Hopefully what we've found helps you on your way but there are lots of members who will be willing to help if you get stuck or want more info.

The official Scottish records (such as the birth of your g grandfather and marriage of his parents etc)can be viewed at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk - a pay per view site.

Annette

I was going through my late grandfathers family tree stuff and old pics and came across Charles' obituaty and it was him that served in the Scottish military because he was too old to serve in america. And was discharged after being hit with mustard gas. So I was wrong about JOHN/JAMES (HIS FATHER) .

One thing that has me puzzled is it said he went back to his native England to serve in the engineers corp.,not the Scottish military. I assume it could of been a type o.

Looks like you've got some good info to build your tree with now. Didn't realize you were a neighbor of mine.....well at least I assume you're in the US! Don't hesitate to ask for further help on anything. You'll get loads of help from the folks around here!

Best wishes

Hello Djd,

If you go to the National Archives WW1 Campaign Medal card site you’ll find only three soldiers with the name Charles Donachie. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/docu ... ueryType=1

Medal card of Donachie, Charles
Corps: Royal Munster Fusiliers
Regiment No: 636
Rank: Private

Medal card of Donachie, Charles
Corps: Royal Engineers
Regiment No: 124762
Rank: Pioneer

Medal card of Donachie, Charles
Corps: Royal Engineers
Regiment No: 418527
Rank: Sapper

Most British Army WW1 soldier’s records were destroyed during WW2 bombing. It appears there are some pension records surviving for one or all of the above. They are available at Ancestry and possibly elsewhere. The medal cards can also be obtained from there. http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?htx ... b+Property

Hope that helps,
Alan

His service record is there at Ancestry. There is also one for Peter's son Charles.

As for 'back home to his native England' well we Scots (and Welsh and Irish) are very used to that. :D
