Annette,
That looks good with the 1851 census, don't think i've seen it before. It's the first one that's said born in Rutherglen, and fits in with the 1871-81 censuses as place of birth.
The 1861 one for Martha fits in with Carlisle, 1871 Gretna, Drumfres, 1881 Gretney,Carlisle. If she was born on the English side of the border, that might be the reason I can't find her or any siblings in births on SP.

Sarah,
I'd penciled that one in, i think it is him who died in Hamilton. His age like Marthas goes up and down. He's 38 in 1871 and 58 in 1881. Martha who died in 1898 has her age as 57, she was born c.1835.
Just waiting for the other half to bring back my credit card for me to buy some credits on SP.

Thanks
Ray

Ok..............how about James Thomson and James Jenkins being the same person.

He is living with his grandparents Thomson in 1851. Both James Jenkins and James Thomson were born at Rutherglen around 1826 ish and as we've seen their ages are all over the place. I had wondered at first if they were related but now I'm pretty sure they are one and the same!

Annette

=D> I wondered that too, Annette, when I saw him with his grandparents! It doesn't explain the gap in the children's ages, but it does explain the lack of a second marriage. Too bad, since that puts them before statutory registration...

All the best,
Sarah

What an interesting theory !
Did wonder about the name Thomson re emerging in 1851 with James Jenkins. Took it at first to be sheer coincidence, or at least James Jenkins and James Thomson were perhaps cousins.
One thing i can't find a James Jenkins marrying any Martha 1861-95.

Thanks

Here they are in 1841 at Cambuslang -

William Thomson 50
Mary Thomson 50
Margrit Thomson 30
Cathrine Thomson 20
John Thomson 15
James Thomson 14
Mary Mcdonald 12
Archibald Cameron 1

So I think there is only one James - Margaret's son to a Mr Jenkins?

Annette

Thank you.
That's some piece of detective work by you all.
Can i get this straight please, James Jenkins is in fact James Thomson ?
I'll be back in Scotland in the next few weeks and will look into the Archive Records as you have advised. Been living in Thailand for quite a few years now, not easy to access things from here. Credit card failed today when i tried to get the SP vouchers. Not insolvent, just the banking system here.
Thank you very much

Hi Ray

You should also be able to see the record Sarah meneitoned at the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh, if you are likely to be near there - they have a digital copy to view on their PCs there.
This record has been digitally imaged, however, and the digital images may be seen in the NRS Search Rooms on the 'Virtual Volumes' system.
Best wishes
Lesley

Ha ha, I know just what you mean! Nothing more suspicious than SP credits to my U.S. credit card! It inevitably screams and shuts down when I charge the whopping great sum of £7 in (gasp!) Scotland! Panic!

Good luck,
Sarah

If you are going to be in Glasgow when you visit Scotland I would also check the poorhouse applications since the family lived there in the 1870s. The archives also have digital copies of the Kirk Sessions.
